Ammy Draft Issue (The Ballad of EVS)

Post by agrudez » Tue Jan 14, 2014 1:56 pm

For those unaware, there was apparently a hiccup in the utility which caused VAL to receive a player other than the one they chose:

They should get whomever their list took originally, no?

...LOL.

Ironically, it was thought that you were having a problem with time.
As such, the GB discussed a variety of options to make things right, and Matt has chosen the following path ahead:

1) Valencia will be assigned EVS (the player they originally intended to select)
2) Orlando Solis (the player whom was taken in the above’s stead) will be taken out of the draft pool (no word on whether or not he will still exist in the file and reappear in next year’s class or not)
3) The draft will be rolled back to SEA’s pick (#24 – last in the first round) so that they may select again (now that EVS, their initial pick, is off the board)
4) The draft clock will be suspended until tomorrow morning at 8AM EST to allow teams to re-adjust their draft lists

We feel that this solution was the “cleanest” as:

1) VAL gets the player they originally intended (ie. they don’t get screwed)
2) SEA doesn’t have to settle for a player they didn’t want [ie. swapping Solis and EVS] (ie. they don’t get screwed)
3) There are no comp picks awarded (ie. everyone behind that potential pick doesn’t get screwed)
4) And Solis didn’t “leap-frog” all of the team’s between VAL and SEA (ie. they don’t get screwed)

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to post them here OR, if you’d prefer, contact either myself or another member of the GB (preferably not Matt, though, as he is busy today) with them.

This is actually a creative and fair idea. The only thing I would suggest is that Solis probably goes back in the draft next year as he's a computer-generated player.

#4 is kind of a good point which few had probably considered: Solis, if not chosen by Valencia, could have been chosen by anyone up to Seattle. It would be completely fair to Seattle to get Solis but not fair to the teams in-between. Taking Solis out of the draft is most reasonable and creates the most realistic phenomenon - if he doesn't exist nobody could have taken him and thus the draft is restored to normalcy (other than the amusing irrelevant side note that all the other teams in-between Valencia and Seattle had a chance at Schledorn and had to choose to pass him up).

It does pretty well fuck everyone below Seattle as all players get moved up a notch, but the total absence of Solis would have done the same so there's no actual harm done.

Yeah, I was curious to see what you guys would do. I think it works best for all, even if it does weaken the draft pool a little bit.

I'll try to get Solis into next year's draft pool, though am not quite sure how to do this yet.

It'll depend, I'm sure, on how much work there is involved for Matt. If noone drafts Solis then I believe he'll become a FA, so there is some intrinsic work needed to keep him from doing so. One solution may be to assign him back to his college team and hope he gets released again next year, though I'm not sure if that is an absolute. Another solution may be to assign him to some team (most likely LV, so Matt can control it) at the end of the draft and then not sign him - which should, I believe, push him back to next year's class (I forget if this works for college seniors, though). At the end of the day, I, personally, won't cry if he gets lost to the wind... in fact, maybe we should let him become a FA and go sign in the EBA - we'll see 'em again in a few years, after all!

It turns out Orlando Solis was ineligible for the draft, since he's actually a year younger. :)
