Glover and Felix for nada a full year later

First, let's talk Felix. Salary: $14.5 million for a 1.1 WAR (132 hits) and a RF with a -9.4 RF (.936 EFF). It was not that hard to give Martin Felix to Madison for nothing. It took a lot of money off the team's books. It would have been nice to get a couple propects back, but the timing of the trade talks didn't allow it. The guy got the first major injury of hos career the year before, just in time for the playoffsm and I guess the team didn't really like that. Then his contact rating went down a point. This year he played fulltime over at Buffalo. He hit 5 home runs in 128 games (he was injured three times at two weeks). This is lowest HR total in his career, after getting his highest HR total in 2020. He did alright for the month that MAD had him (OPS .866). Then the financial burden of carrying a $14.5 million player helped MAD send him to BUF for Wiliam Bullies, ss Dre-ing Tree and C Alejandro Guardado. None of these guys are fulltimers. The SS and the C are bit players. MAD didn't get a lot. They got more than GRN did, which was nothing. But both teams managed to get a guy who was making way too much money off their teams. Can Felix bounce back? I don't think he will be worth anything near $14 million next season. BUF have got him for cheap. But $14 million is still a lot for one player in this league. And it is a heck of a lot for 1.1 WAR and below average defense.

Now the Glover.

One of the best in the league. When he was with Greenville. Yeah, he hit .300 (led MAD) and whalloped 30 homeruns. The 5.3 WAR is more than respectible. He even had a positive year at shortstop, but it was no where near how he used to play shortstop down here. Greenville SS Oggie Oglethorpe hit 38 homers, had a 4.5 WAR and is a much better shortstop. Last July in 2020 Glover had the first major injury of his career. At that point, the team released him and a big contract ($18 million a season till he turns 38 or 39 or something) to MAD. I didn't think he would hit all that great at MAD. The stadium there is not nice to RHH. Yes it s true that 30 homeruns and a .300 average is nice. But for $18 million? Ogglethorpe makes $4 million. Bruce the Bat Wayne had a 5.3 WAR last year for $7.7 million. Wayne had an off year this season. but he ended the season with 14 homeruns in his last 25 games. Maybe the Glove had an off year also. It certainly looks like it compared to what he has done in the past. Can he do it for MAD? That is the big question. As far as economizing is concerned, gettin rid of the two big names saved us $32 million this season. That amount would have sunk us. We just made a $4 million profit as it is. So costwise the moves were made. We don't operate like what's that team around here. The Glover dump saves us $18 million a season. His contract has a team option after a couple more seasons. We will see if MAD thinks he is worth that much to extend, or will they try to negotiate a lower deal.

Easy there guy

Your hand AND your back must be getting sore

all I see is Madison in the playoffs, and Greenville in the basement

but I guess we all see what we want

I look at this similar to a deal the Reds made many years ago. A deal in which they sent Austin Kearns (with others) to Washington for Gary Majewski (and other players).

The Reds needed reliever help at the time. Looking back on the deal in a historical perspective, neither team won nor loss the trade because all the players wound up sucking. But at the time, the pieces the Reds sent in the trade were far more valuable. What the Reds got in the deal did not add up to what they sent at the time. What you got in the deal, regardless of how you spin it now, doesn't add up to the value that Felix and Glover had.

With that said, I've had Glover on the trade block all season and haven't gotten an offer. Granted I wouldn't have traded him for peanuts but would have wanted a fair price. This time last season, I'm sure you could have made a block post saying "Highest bidder gets Glover. And the price may shock you so make an offer." You would have gotten more than the nothing I gave you.

Yes, MAD gave GRN nothing, as the topic says. Greenville gave itself minus $150 million in bills.

Yeah, Greenville got rid of that $150M and slammed the potential championship window shut in the same motion. I get wanting to move the salary, but if you don't want to pay your guys the huge deals you have to be willing to let them walk. If Glover had left you as a FA, you would've at least gotten a comp pick for him. That's a lottery ticket at worst.

I needed some bats in the OF, and I still do. I had a bit of room in my budget, so I was happy to acquire Felix. I hope for more from him next year.
