The Wisconsin Wire 2.3 - Hitter of the Year

Post by elligator » Wed Aug 25, 2010 2:44 pm

Saying there was a hitter of the year on the fourth worst team in the MBBA is like trying to name the dictator of the year in a banana republic, you just pick the guy who did the least amount of damage.

There were several players who kicked it into high gear for the last couple of months to help the Wolves climb a couple of spots in the overall rankings, but amongst the players who played all season, CF Clifford "Method Man" Smith stands out. Smith began the season in left field, but was eventually moved to centerfield, which is out of his comfort zone, being that he is a natural left fielder. In center however, Smith played error-free ball for two months. It is likely that he will again take the field in center to start 1997. Or that the team may trade him for a more natural centerfielder. Either way, Clifford has responded well to the move thus far.

Offensively, Method Man brings a lot to the table and began the year hitting like his hair was on fire in April, with 10 homers and a .328 batting average. He cooled off significantly in May, but was still hitting well. After May, other than a strong July, he pretty much coasted the rest of the way. Smith did finish with a pretty solid batting line though - .269/34/99. The Wolves have put some good pieces in the lineup to complement Smith going into 1997, and he should hopefully benefit from the better protection in the lineup.
