Front Page

Post by Greeney03 » Sun Jan 13, 2013 3:48 pm

Hey folks,

I'm not sure if you knew that MBWBA has a working front page/home page. If I'm not mistaken, most of us here go straight to the forums to check out whats going on with the league, and totally abandon the front page. It made me think, what if we use the front page as the article/stories page? Since Matt is using Wordpress in the home page, I created a test blog for MBWBA to create a prototype of my proposal. What are the benefits of this proposal?

- All stories from all teams goes to one location for easy reading

- On the admin side, Matt will be easily count the # of articles we wrote for PP (we'll have a separate accts in Wordpress)

- More tools for writers (using Wordpress blog tools)

- We can customize the page to our liking (add standings, stats, etc)

Those are the few advantages using Wordpress as our home page. To check out the prototype, please visit this site:

http://greeneytest.wordpress.com/

What do you guys think?

PS.

I'm willing to help Matt to setup the homepage if needed.

I'm glad you like the idea! :)

I just thought it would be a waste of real estate if we don't use the front page.

I'm actually against it.

For example" Seattle did his stuff outside of the forums, now its all gone. Its not as interactive if it's not all here.

In Seattle's case, he used his own blog for his stories (outside our website), I did this with him in the past.

But in this case, it will be in our front page. Basically we're turning http://baseballretrospective.com/ into our central news hub.

EDIT:

Or maybe...if some of the users prefer to post their stories in the forums, they can do that, and also copy their story in our front page. Just a thought.

I just think that it lends itself to more activity within the forums.

Also, maintaining the front page makes more work for me which I just don't have the time for right now.\

I actually agree with Matt on this, I didn't envisage it replacing the forum as the main hub of activity. I still saw all the activity being centred on posting in the team new section but with whoever's maintaining the front page (and it doesn't have to be Matt) picking the best of the updates to be posted on the frontpage to give visitors / prospective GM's an interesting landing place when they visit the MBBA. If I'm looking at a new league I always find just a forum a bit bland, a colourful front-end makes it a much friendlier place to peruse.

But I'm definitely with Matt on this, we have a good community there based around the forum. I'd just view this as more for the general community

That's pretty much the plan, Nigel. A landing page for visitors to look at. And like I said, I'm willing to manage the front page for Matt. I'm very familiar with Wordpress dashboard. All team news STILL goes in the team forums, but if the manager wanted to post their articles in the front page, they can still do that since they will have a separate account in the front page. OR as the admin of the front page, I can copy what we have in the team news forum and paste it there. I really do not want to add more work for Matt as much as possible.

It took awhile for me to stop looking for the Blazers logo and instead get used to the Crusaders shield.

If I have the PP left over (eh, who am I kidding, I'm printing the stuff) this offseason I am hoping to re-brand Omaha with a new logo/nickname, so you can potentially get the Barnstormers moniker/logo back.

That means I would have to move right? I kinda like Greenville though.
