Yellow Springs, Ohio-

Hawaii 12 Yellow Springs 5 (21 innings)- Tuesday, June 12, 2063

WP- Utkan Gocek (4-2)

LP- Pancho ‘Gauntlet’ Escalante (2-1)

Save- Nine

Time: 8:50

Attendance- 46,189 at Utopia Field

The Hawaii Tropics and Yellow Springs Nine played a 21-inning marathon that ended with a Hawaii offensive outburst. The Trops scored seven runs on seven hits in the top of the 21st to take Game 1 from the Nine. The only run that was needed was a lead off solo homer (8) off the bat of Armando Medina that put the Trops up for good. Hawaii 3B Jorge Dodd had a big day at the plate going 5 for 10 with two homers (14), scored four runs and drove in three.

On the mound, Trops reliever Utkan Gocek earned the win with three scoreless innings of work when the team needed it. He gave up a hit, walked one and struck out three in his 4th win of the season. Martin ‘Lumps’ Garcia made the start for Hawaii allowing a run on two hits and four walks. He fanned six batters in 4.1 innings in the no decision.

The Trops and Nine used 10 pitchers each and 6 of those pitchers threw 3+ innings. The bullpens are taxed for the rest of the series which will make it interesting to say the least.

Yellow Springs 7 Hawaii 5- Wednesday, June 13, 2063

WP- Nasir al Din bin Sahir (1-2) BS (3)

LP- Reynaldo Trinidad (3-2)

Save- Ramon Sanchez (1)

Time: 3:39

Attendance- 45,167 at Utopia Field

The Yellow Springs Nine break a 5-5 tie in the 8th inning with two runs off Hawaii reliever Reynaldo Trinidad then hold the Trops off to even the series 1-1. Trinidad gave up the two runs on three hits and a walk in his inning of work and falls to 3-2. Ruben bin Majid al Din labored through his start for Hawaii allowing five runs on five hits and three walks in 6.1 innings. He fanned three in a no decision.

Jorge Dodd was 2 for 4, scored a run and drove in one. Carlos Schumann was 3 for 5 with a double (11), stole a base (14), scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Julian Rivera hasn’t played great defense but he continues to hit and produce runs. He was 2 for 4 with his 9th double and drove in two runs.

Yellow Springs 5 Hawaii 3- Thursday, June 14, 2063

WP- Javier Martinez (5-3)

LP- Alex Garcia (4-3)

Save- Cory ‘Mugshot’ McGuire (9)

Time: 3:11

Attendance- 46,812 at Utopia Field

The Nine pitching staff keeps the Hawaii offense off the basepaths and in the ballpark to eke out another win. The Trops did manage three runs on eight hits but drew just three walks and struck out six times. Rookie DH Vicente ‘Yogi’ Martinez had a pinch-hit solo blast for his 25th of the season.

Tropis starter Slobodan Omeragic was sharp for Hawaii allowing two runs on four hits and a couple of walks in five innings. He struck out three in the no decision, but it doesn’t look good for the veteran starter to remain on the team. Alex Garcia took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief to fall to 4-3.

Hawaii 5 Yellow Springs 2- Friday, June 15, 2063

WP- Daniel Thornton (1-5)

LP- Hector Delgado (6-4)

Save- Cale Cote (2)

Time: 3:05

Attendance- 51,736 at Utopia Field

The Tropics score three runs in the 3rd inning to take a one-run lead before pulling away with two in the 9th on a Vicente Martinez blast (26). Dodd, Jose Ordonez, and Roberto Lopez each had an RBI in the 3rd inning. Lopez was 2 for 4 with the RBI, stole a base, was caught stealing and scored a run.

Daniel Thornton earned the win throwing 67 pitches in five innings and allowing two runs on two hits. He walked none and fanned six batters and is now 1-5 with a 4.86 ERA. Gocek followed that with two scoreless innings before handing the ball to Bob Westbrooks for 1.2 scoreless innings and three Ks. Cale Cote earned his 2nd save with a K to end the game.

The Trops and Nine split the four-game series.

“Meh.”, said Trops GM Jim Walker.

Did any starters relieve in the 21 inning game if you each used 10 guys?

Not for Hawaii, but Yellow Springs had a starter (Harris) and a swingman (Lindsay) pitch.
