BETTING LINES SKEWER BIKINI CHANCES
June 25, 2063 -- Despite leading the Pacific Division, the Bikini Krill have not convinced the pundits and predictors, it seems, as the latest lines for participation in what GM Ron Collins calls the Silly Postseason Exhibition Tournament (SPET) are not kind to the Klub. Whereas every other team in the league that leads a division is considered a 95% lock or better for appearance in the Monty Brewster challenge, the Krill sit at a lowly 56%, even below Pacific opposition in Portland (70%) and Hawaii (73%). The Klub is considered to have only a 1 in 5 chance of holding onto their division leadership.
"That's fine by me," Collins said in a mid-afternoon presser earlier this morning. "We're getting used to being underappreciated. I think all we can do is lace them up and play the games."
"Our fans know better," added Assistant GM Monica Green, seated beside him. "Our fundamentals are fine."
The Krill's offense and defense both sit at 4th best in the league, which suggest balanced strength, but that pairing has still translated into only a +36 run differential, which puts them behind Des Moines, Portland, Nashville, Twin Cities, and Hawaii. "Run Differential is a metric that's highly subject to a few games where big runs are scored," explained Amit, Hahn, the team's youthful analytics leader, who noted that the team had lost their last two games by a combined score of 20-2. "That means two games ago we were +54, so..." then he shrugged.
Cloned Krill manager Kate Fiscus was equally sanguine. "We know who we are by now. We understand our roles and we know how to deal with the criticism," she said. "I tell my guy to just keep stroking, you know. Get into the game and do your thing until we hit the happy place."
Injured players Returning
Fiscus also noted that the projections don't include the impact of the return of closer Winston Morris (1-1, 13 saves, 0.38 ERA) or shortstop Keith Williams (1.7 ZR, 1.024 EFF), who are both set to play this week, and that it wouldn't have a clue how to take into account the arrival of reliever Brain Capps, who is expected to join the team in the next week or two after having missed the entire season to date.
"If there's one thing I've learned from both of my lives," said the clone, "is that you have to let the haters be haters."
