2063.07 Press Release: Nine Congratulate Indianapolis on Playoff Appearance
The Pheasants, with 93 wins on the season just proved to be a bit too much for the Downforce, who battled into the wildcard race despite often losing players to the major league club, such as Tony Bunce, Attana Sangeeta, Cecil Durdle, Pete Hulett, and Byron Radcliffe.
"It's not always easy being the AAA manager," said Dave Tallent, who took over in 2060. "You have to get used to there being a steady stream of players that either are going to get called up at some point, are sent down because they're struggling, or cycled through in an attempt to find a bounce-back candidate, like Radcliffe was. But we got there, even if it didn't work out the way I'd hoped. You know I made the playoffs 5 times in a row before coming to this backwards organization, right?"
"Dave's rather outspoken," said GM Rob McMonigal, but I do agree the job can be hard at times. Still, he did a great job with the players we gave him, and while we'd loved to have done more damage, just getting into the playoffs is huge for people like Leslie Hartman and Javier Martinez.
Top players on the Downforce who stayed all year included:
SS Leslie Hartman, 1st round pick in 2060. .318 average, 5.15 range, 19.8 ZR, 4.6 WAR
OF Mark Denham, 2060 minor league free agent. .348 average, .945 OPS, 2.2 WAR
SP Chris Lacy, 2061 minor league free agent (originally 3rd round pick in 2045 by the Nine). 10-9, 3.66 ERA, 118Ks, 1.27 WHIP, 3.3 WAR
SP Guo-liang Chen, 2061 minor league free agent. 12-9, 3.75 ERA, 137K, 1.26 WHIP, 2.6 WAR
"This is a transitional time for us in Indianapolis," added McMonigal. "We're looking less at just rewarding organizational talent who have "earned" their way up and more towards people who can help the Nine win games. So there's a much older mix to the team than there used to be. But we appreciate what these veterans bring to the table."
Indianapolis will look to do more than just make the playoffs in 2063.

Re: 2063.07 Press Release: Nine Congratulate Indianapolis on Playoff Appearance

"You know, there’s just one thing that’s been bugging me. It’s probably nothing, but I just can’t seem to let it go."
Columbo flips open a small notepad.
"So I was lookin’ over this timeline here. Adrian Tallent, nice kid, born in late January of 2040, right? Place called Walnut Creek, California. Now, that’s about 70 miles from Sacramento. Not exactly next door, but not a world away either. Close enough if someone was, let’s say, passin’ through on business."
Pauses, thoughtful.
"Now here’s the part that’s got me curious. If you work it backwards. Mind you, I’m no doctor, but I’ve seen a few calendars in my day. A late January birth would put conception somewhere around early May of 2039, give or take."
Looks up, blinking.
"And wouldn’t you know it, I happened to check some travel logs, or, uh, let’s call them game schedules. In May of ’39, Dave — that’s Dave Tallent from the Hawaii Tropics, real solid third baseman, decent bat if I remember — well, turns out he was on a road trip that had him in Sacramento for a few days."
Scratches his head with a pencil.
"Now, I’m sure it’s just a coincidence. I mean, lots of people pass through Sacramento. But here’s a guy, playin’ ball in Hawaii, only makes it to California every now and then, and just happens to be in the general vicinity at the exact time someone might’ve been…y’know…startin’ a family over in Walnut Creek?"
Columbo starts to walk away, then stops and turns around.

"Just one more thing...if I recall, didn't Dave struggle in the early part of 2039? Maybe wrecked with guilt? Or shock from some news? Or maybe he just wasn't seeing the ball well out of the pitcher hand, I dunno. It just seems a little too perfect to not look into..."

I've always chuckled at the name of your AAA team. For actual IndyCars, IMS is the track where they actually have the least amount of "downforce" and thence reach the highest speeds.

I really don't care for that team's set up but I am the world's worst at graphics, so they'll be the downforce for a long time, I suspect, haha.jiminyhopkins wrote: ↑Sun Jun 15, 2025 1:29 amI've always chuckled at the name of your AAA team.
