2063.05: SFB Drafts Two, Loses One in Rule 5

1/1/2063

Feels good to finally type "2063" up above. The Rule 5 draft came and went with the Bears selecting two players to fill up the 40-man roster. We expected to take three players but worked out a trade with Atlantic City right beforehand that I'll discuss in more detail below. One player was lost from the San Fernando organization when they were drafted by another team.

Players Drafted
Off Topic
San Fernando Bears: Drafted 2B Juan Montoya in the 2062 Rule 5 Draft (Round 1, Pick 21, 21st overall Pick) from the Valencia Stars.
Alright! Montoya was one of the top guys on my board of 30+ players so we're excited to bring him into the fold from a rival Pacific organization. The Bears needed a backup middle infielder to fill out the roster (no thanks on what's available in free agency) and Montoya looks capable at second base. "Redneck" won't hit for power but I think he can keep his OBP north of .300 with his current ratings. If he develops, Montoya has the potential to be a leadoff hitter with a high OBP. A sparkplug personality is also welcome on the bench.

San Fernando Bears: Drafted 2B Aggur Lugono in the 2062 Rule 5 Draft (Round 2, Pick 21, 53rd overall Pick) from the Omaha Cyclones.
If we knew our first pick was going to be used on a second baseman maybe we'd have gone another direction, but then again Lugono isn't really a middle infielder. Lugono is a tweener who we identified as somebody worth having in the lineup against LHP even if that is at designated hitter. He OPS'd .884 last year in AAA and is fully developed so this isn't a long-term project.

The complicating factor for this pick to survive on our active roster is that we already acquired a DH vLHP with the below trade. Schumacher is a more proven player having produced some in the BBA last season, but Lugono might have the better current ratings, at least some skill defensively, and a superior personality. This should be a spring competition to watch.

The Atlantic City Gamblers traded 24-year old LF Cornell Schumacher to the San Fernando Bears, getting 23-year old minor league LHP Clay Stabb in return.

Player Lost
Off Topic
Long Beach Surfers: Drafted 3B Ricardo Antúnez in the 2062 Rule 5 Draft (Round 1, Pick 3, 3rd overall Pick) from the San Fernando Bears.
This is a bummer because we just acquired Antunez from the Robins. I thought about protecting him but figured there were plenty of underdeveloped first baseman in the pool. Unfortunately for us, Antunez is just proficient enough defensively for Lane to view him as an actual third baseman. At least he was the only player we lost and not somebody I view as difficult to replace.

Long Beach has a history of taking players in the Rule 5 and returning them, so maybe Antunez makes his way home. After reviewing their roster I don't see a ton of room for a corner guy, especially after trading for Emilio Morales Jr. earlier in the offseason. On the other hand, he was the third overall pick in this draft. Long Beach added a couple of free agents this sim but they still don't look like a team that is going to contend so maybe the Surfers stash their pick. We'll see.

Remember, Long Beach puts blocks of cement at third base.
