Slugger Shavings 2062.6 - Two big contracts coming off the books

Post by RT60 » Sun Apr 20, 2025 9:07 pm

While Louisville fans watched Nashville win another championship, GM BP was busy at the office mulling over the potential exercise of a big contract option. That option belonged to the team for none other than Todd Tatlock. Mr. Tatlock and his mustache came to Louisville via trade before the start of the 2062 season with two years left on a 3-year/35.2M contract. The Sluggers had the cash to spend and loved the prospect of having a popular player that could help mentor youngster Dave Armstrong. Tatlock did his job well, splitting time with Armstrong with a WAR of 2.1 before rupturing his Achilles at the end of August.

With Tatlock on the injured list and likely to miss Spring Training and possibly the start of the regular season, and with Dave Armstrong showing he is ready to carry the load next season, the question of whether to exercise Tatlock's 10.2M option for the last year of his contract became acute. In reality, it was never really that hard of a decision. Even before Tatlock's injury, it was very likely he was going to get hurt, and the team was lucky to have him for almost the entire year. That luck has certainly run out, and it simply wouldn't make sense to risk 10.2M when it could be put to other uses. A low-key happy-hour going away party has been set for later this week at Todd's favorite food truck at the Truck Stop.

Overshadowed by the news about Tatlock was the retirement of Scott Torres. Torres' six-year/80M contract was over, and he knew he would be lucky to even stay in the BBA at this point. He was a shell of the player he was when he gleefully signed the momentously stupid contract thrown at him by GM BP. The expiration of that contract means 11M less in payroll for 2063. When factoring in the decline of Tatlock's option, that is over 21M that won't be going out to door in 2063. Or at least not to them.

I liked learning the whole backstory with Tatlock. Makes sense.

And ironically, he's not known for his leadership!

Be fun to see where you put that money.
