The mid-week series, one which Des Moines dominated the Mopes of Sacramento three games to one, 5-2, 0-5, 2-5, 5-1, brought the Kernels to a .500 record (29-29) as they headed out for a 16-game road trip that could make or break the Kernels 2062 season.
The series, besides the smell of victory, featured left-over Lindsay Barber Voodoo Dolls, and thousands more were retreaded and rethreaded throughout the week, and they proved efficacious as late as Friday versus Lindsay's namesake Jamie, who succumbed to his third loss of the season. That Barber was stuck with plenty of pins, and the losing decision, despite surrendering only two runs. Reliever Angus Trew, who allowed three runs on homers by CF Ken'ichi Okubo and LF Wan-ling Koo, seemed more needled by the affair.
Other news from the series: In Game 3, the loss for DM, SP Arnold Cantrell (4-4, 2.91) departed after facing four batters, and 3B Félix 'Matchbox' Parreno was injured (for prolly about three weeks). That's the second very early departure in Cantrell's last three starts (he was also bid aloha in Hawaii). Des Moines is hoping the 35 year-old's ailments won't continue to affect him this way through the season. DM picked up a team option before the season, thinking this might be a playoff year, and Cantrell's a playoff pitcher.
In Game 2 Salah Lutfi, for no discernable reason, started instead of the scheduled Steven Clayton (6-3, 4.83). Lufti allowed four runs in five innings, but the Kernels won the game with a four-run 7th. Rafael Taboada allowed three of those runs, and you haven't seen more people on their feet, dolls and pins in hand, as on that occasion.
The dolls served their purpose, but the team's trainer is afraid they might have unintended side effects, and so the promotion won't be repeated.

I didn’t think Lutfi would develop but with that last point of control he’ll be dangerous.
