Chants Begin for "Fire them All"
May 1, 2062 | Marshall Islands | The few fans who are coming to Forever Land Park these days are making their expectations clear. They are tired, it seems, of watching the same old retreads show up in left and right field, and center field for that matter.
"The team can't win with Mike Cox there," said one fan, who wished to remain anonymous. "And the corners are just a blazing dumpster fire."
Cox, the reclamation project from Charlotte, has started 26 of the team's 27 games. He's hitting a robust .171 in those 26 games, and been mediocre in the field. Mat gives him a generous -0.3 WAR, which projects to about a -1.5 across a season. Joy. Phil Tatham has started 26 games in left field. He's playing (.264/.316/.402, -2.8 ZR) as if the term "milquetoast" was developed just for him. Graham Aubry has gotten 17 of the team's starts in left field, and the best you can say (.250/.313/.300) is that he hasn't gotten hurt. Yet.
With retread young journeymen Fernando Bushy and Marty Barnett as the choices behind them, and the club apparently under dire financial constraints, the picture is bleak.
The fans have the answer they want to hear, though, and that answer is "Bring in the Kids"
Virtual media sites across the globe are filled with conversations about the kids down at Pasco, and ponderings about why they aren't playing in Bikini. "They must have pissed Kate off during spring training" seems to be the base answer. Either that, or the club is just being stingy with service time. Taking a scan at the kids' numbers in AAA bears some merit.
Swammy and Ramos are killing it offensively. Sanz is struggling with the bat in his transition to AAA, but covering enough ground to make Baby Cox weep.
"We love all three of these players," said assistant GM Monica Green while charming the fans at a recent luncheon event. "But it's also clear that they have a few rough spots to work out. With a little luck and a lot of hard work, though, we'll see them all at Forever Park before the year's out."
That sounds like a death knell to fans, though. And the turnstiles aren't styling.
So we'll see what happens.
