2061.08 A Desperate Phone Call (Part 2)

Bo Jordan stared at his phone, then out the window of his office, staring out at Utopia Field, a few spotlights still on despite it being the off-season. Then he looked back at his phone again.

What in the world had just happened? Had he really gotten a call out of the blue from a random GM with a stupid name, trying to make his way into the BBA ecosystem with a tip that wasn't even all that great? Or was there something more? That fool on the phone couldn't possibly be McMonigal, could he? Why would he pull such an elaborate prank?

It sure hadn't sounded like one.

"I'm getting too old for this," said Jordan to no one in particular.

He walked himself back to his desk and sat down, running through the conversation in his head. Whoever that man was on the phone, he clearly seemed to think he knew Bo intimately and was privy to some of the private conversations going on in the front office. But given the amount of turnover (was that idiot Russell the 3rd or 4th Assistant GM since McMonigal got here?), anyone could know those details.

Maybe he should have asked him something more personal, like what they'd discussed in a private lunch about the budget last season. Oh well, it was too late for that now. If he called back, and this man was just a disturbed lunatic, he'd be feeding into his mania.

Still, something nagged at him. That final, "I won't sir" felt like it came from someone who shared a bond with Jordan, not just a rando from another continent looking to upgrade his status.

Could it be?

"Nah," said Jordan to himself. "I've been reading too much Analog magazine again.
