2061 Season Snapshot
As with, I assume, pretty much every team in the league, Bikini has a slate full of solid candidates for the left field position. Some of them can even play a little bit of defense, but let's not kid ourselves now, this position is not the bastion of lockdown Zimmer award candidates.
If you follow the Krill at all, you are probably familiar with the fundamental problem that we have been facing since I took over the team. Our corner outfielders are passable, and have always been passable. But there are gloves have pretty consistently then about as appealing as seaweed left to rot in the sun. We'd like to improve on that. Of course we would. Will we? Well...
Let's take a look, shall we?
#1 Abhijana Swamy
I admit to an undying love for Swamy based on his name alone. Seriously, right? Who could not love a pure left-handed, line drive hitter named Abhijana Swamy? I'll tell you who opposing pitchers, that's who. I selected Swamy in the second round of the 2060 draft season, and he went straight from college to AA Kamloops, whereupon he took to making opposing pitchers suffer. He turned 20 this June, and finished the season with 21 doubles, 5 triples, and 10 home runs. He still has ratings room to grow, so I expect he'll be in AAA next year. We'll see.
The problem of course is with that glove, again. It's poor enough that it drug his .362 wOBA down to where it only registered .8 WAR. He went to the dev lab last year, and had a successful run at improving that defense (har!). Expect him to return to Pain Island again this offseason.
2062 Projection: Probably time for a year in AAA?
#2 Boguljub Pograjac
Sometimes the world gives you little gifts. And sometimes those gifts are not so little.
Enter pre swinging left-handed pull hitter Boguljub Pograjac, a six foot, one inch, 170 LB package of lightning in a bottle. He's a scouting find from a couple years back, but given his record, when he hit that three contact rating we brought him on up to Ogden where he created... Well, he created a stat line that scouting discoveries tend to create. The profile still looks good though. Power to spare that comes with solid contact and the ability to run. Is globe well nothing to write home about, should be at least passable most of the time. Though let's be honest, that "3" error is going to make him somewhat comedic in the field at times. He's young though. Give it time. If he bumps that I, we're talking about a player who will work at a totally different level than most human beings. So we can wait.
2062 Projection: Pograjac will probably start at rookie ball again, but we'll see where he ends.
#3 Naim Hamadani
I'm not a fan of putting an international complex guy in the upper part of prospect lists. It's not a problem, of course, but as we know international guys are risky as Hades. But Hamadani has a profile that works, including a glove that already looks good enough that it will only take a little experience to let him play into it. I like that. Like center field prospect Ramon Sanz, he's a guy that can do a little bit of everything. I like that too. So my eyes are on him, and I'll be looking closely at that rating progression. The kid is only 16 years old, after all, so patience is the name of the game.
2062 Projection: I would prefer to keep in the in the complex for at least one more year, so most likely will look to draft another prospect to play left field In Ogden next year.
#4 Andres Aguilar
Ohh look, here's another international complex scouting discovery whose sports an interesting ratings profile but who has yet to really grow into any of them. He's 19 years old though, and the clock it's ticking pretty rapidly for him. We brought him out of the complex in the middle of the year last year to see if we could get him going. It's too early to say exactly what the results will be, but he did see 82 plate appearances and posted a .291/.317/.354 slash line, so that's a positive feature.
2062 Projection: if his ratings don't move in 2062, he'll be off the list. So we'll be hunting playing time for him whether it's in Ogden at rookie ball, or port-au-prince at Short A.
#5 Felix Caraballo
Caraballo is a guy that I have been rooting for since the moment I drafted him in the 11th round of the 2057 process. I think it's the name Felix, to be honest, but it doesn't really matter. The moment I drafted him I pictured him as this Sammy Sosa kind of guy. Ebullient common in a way. I admit I don't know why. He came to the club listed as a center fielder, but even then it was clear he was not going to be able to play that role without a significant improvement in the glove. That didn't really matter though. The only question was whether he would grow into that profile. He's 21 now, and interestingly enough he's grown in to the power and eye portion of these readings but it's still trying to figure out how to put his bat on the ball a little more often. Though the ratings don't quite show it yet his numbers in July and August gives strong suggestion that perhaps he's found some of the magic.
2062 Projection: Right now I expect Caraballo to be playing left field at Lake City A-Ball all year in 2062. I'll bring him to spring training though, and see what I think at that point. Fingers are crossed. It's weird, right? How we begin to seriously root for these guys who live officially inside a computer, but in reality are fully fleshed out inside our minds.
