Training Table Fills Up
April 18, 2060: Marshall Islands – The Bikini Krill will enter a three games series with Hawaii missing three of its key players, probably the biggest blow being shortstop Keith Williams, who suffered an intercostal strain earlier in the week and has been put on the injured list for what is expected to be three weeks, give or take.
Outfielders Michael Buckley (back stiffness) and Graham Aubry (hamstring strain) are also beaten up badly enough that the club is considering disabling them both in favor of recalling a couple AAA outfielders who may or may not be Fernando Bushey and Stephen Schmidt.
Williams is the more difficult choice in that the club doesn’t have anyone who can replace his glovework unless they maybe want to go down into AA for no-hit wonder Pat Vaive. Normally one might be tempted to call up Mitchell Cook, but his bat is clearly not ready, and it makes little sense to get his service time clock running if something close to full value isn’t there.
“Right now I’m thinking that Run-ming (Gui) will step in for the short term,” said manager Kate Fiscus. “That’s why he’s on the roster.” Gui’s power bat would provide a different look from Williams, who was hitting only .241 in the early stages of the season.
With Gui already on the roster, no word has been made regarding who else might be called up, or whether the slot could be left unfilled. Rumor is that lefty reliever Enrique Villarreal may be very close to a debut.
