Brooklyn State Of Mind: Does Clulow Jr. Trade Suggest Something About Jose Torres? (2060.10)

Given that the Robins aren't going to be heading to the BBA playoffs later on in this season, there was some expectations that the Robins would have a quiet deadline. But in New York City, secrets are very hard to keep. And when Stephen Clulow Jr. was spotted boarding a private plane at Teterboro airport headed to the West Coast, the jig was up. It turns out that Clulow Jr. has been traded to the Vancouver Mounties for a pair of 19 year old pitchers in Bobby McHorne and Beau Broomhall. Both of those players are playing in Rookie ball, with the expectation that they can be decent players for the Robins down the line.

A lot of chatter around the Robins is wondering if they could have gotten more for Clulow if they had given teams a heads up about his availability? Certainly, that is fair to ask. However, sources inside the Robins indicated that Vancouver reached out with a trade offer first. At the end of the day, this trade might not be that bad even if Bobby and Beau don't pan out. Remember, the Robins did clear some salary space in order to better position themselves to keep some players or give themselves some room to work with this offseason. And on one Robins fan forum, the next obvious question is being asked.

Besides the AAA San Francisco Doves being in a pennant race, a lot of attention has been given to keeping an eye on Jose Torres. The 20 year old pitcher is of course considered the jewel of the Robins crown, and has been at the top of the AAA pitching charts in a number of good categories. On Robins Twitter, #TorresWatch means that fans are wondering when Torres is going to come up to the bigs. No, Torres isn't coming up despite being added to the 40 man roster. But what trading Clulow Jr. suggests is that the team thinks that Torres could be coming to the big leagues, given that he is developing nicely and has benefitted from being in a division race with San Francisco.

Why was Torres added to the 40-man roster?

Because I wanted to make sure that I had done it before I can forget.
