Cantu was a star athlete for his local high school in Corpus Christi, TX. Not only was he a star catcher, but received several Division 1 scholarships across the nation to play quarterback. Standing at 6’5, Cantu boasts amazing arm strength and was ranked as the #1 QB recruit in the nation. Many teams believed he wouldn’t sign and would instead opt for college, but the Bluebirds took a risk and drafted the catcher who had fallen to the 34th overall pick in the first round of the 2057 amateur draft. Fortunately, Cantu was impressed with the Nashville organization and the GM’s idea of plugging him in as future Hall of Famer, Jesús Rodríguez’ssuccessor. His nickname, Shotgun, pays homage to his playing days as a quarterback, but is also aptly-named for his ability to shoot down any runners attempting to run on him.

While Shotgun may not have the highest offensive ceiling, he was seen as one of the most polished defensive catchers in the draft. Upon signing with Nashville, Cantu was sent to Short A for the remainder of the season and played well. He slashed .283/.356/.363 in 31 GS, but struggled receiving the ball from more talented pitchers. He will need to work on improving his defense, but he plays to his potential, he will have a long career in the BBA.

He’ll be what, 19 years old in 2060? And Rodriguez will be 40. I’m thinking somebody else catches the bluebirds in between.

Yep. I'm expecting this to be J-Rod's last year. I'll need a filler for a year or two depending on where Cantu's defense is. Only a 5/9 at C right now.

I'm still very high on Cantu and hope he can replace J-Rod when he retires. Rodriguez is still hanging in there, but lumped a little defensively this season, so he is a ticking time bomb. Unfortunately, Cantu isn't quite ready to take over. The re-sim caused him to go from Outstanding to Success on his defensive regimen, which was devastating to see. Unfortunately, he didn't see an increase in his blocking or framing, after all, but is still going to be one of the league's best defensive catchers in a couple years. He'll remain in Single A this season and is currently OPSing .700, which is what I would expect. He exceeded expectations with a .788 OPS in 2058.

Well, we never expected Cantu to be much of a hitter, so not too surprised here. Could he start in the BBA today? Probably. Will he? Maaaaybe. J-Rod lumped again in defense after we brought him back for another season since there were no better options. Cantu could bring his glove to Nashville, where he continues to improve and currently sits 10/8/9/10 behind the plate. If J-Rod continues falling off, Cantu might go up this season, but we'd like to wait another year until Cantu is a bit better offensively.

We knew Cantu was never gonna be much of a hitter, but we love his defensive abilities behind the plate. We've seen some positivity from David Lopez behind the plate that will allow Cantu a little more seasoning in the minors, but he could be up at some point this year if our current catcher situation doesn't pan out. Cantu's catching ability did get a minor bump this offseason, so love that.

I've grown less in love with Cantu over the past season, mostly due to the success of David Lopez last season. Still, I love Cantu's defensive abilities and he will serve as Nashville's backup catcher this year. If Lopez hits a sophomore slump, Cantu could see more time.
