2057-3 Long Morning
“Yeah put on another pot, I’m gonna need it”
Was I crazy for attempting to make this work? I had first inquired about making a deal for Alaric Wullenweber about a week ago, to which the GM of the Oysters felt like I didn’t have enough to make a trade. That changed earlier in the morning when I was essentially hit with a, ‘you up’ text. Granted I haven’t slept much this last week so maybe I wasn’t in the best mindset to try to work out a deal but I couldn’t help but salivate over a potential 1-2 Phil Cole Alaric Wullenweber.
Of course the initial offer was asking for a lot, like enough where my farm system would be as barren as Ron’s trophy case.
“I’m afraid that’s far too much for me to do.”
“It’s just my opening offer, I’m free for discussion.”
So that’s how a long morning of back and forth started. I won’t get into the insane detail that has led me up to this final offer I submitted but it’s taken lots of “would this work?” and “how about him instead of that guy?” Eventually during the negotiations I got hit with the classic:
“There is another team I’m in talks with and we’re getting close.”
This has got to be a bluff. I thought to myself. Besides we were beginning to make progress and I felt we were only one or two pieces away from making this work.
I took a moment to compile what I felt was a fair enough final offer and sent it in to his inbox. I sat by the phone waiting for answer. But suddenly the phone didn’t immediately ring back. That’s when I felt a shiver go down my spine.
He wasn’t bluffing was he?
Suddenly after about 15 minutes the phone rings. I pick it up with enthusiasm, only to be greeted with,
“Sorry, he’s gone”
It had been roughly 2 and a half hours of back and forth and I felt as though I had just been crushed by the weight of the world. Then I realized I only had one question to ask.
“Who got him?”
There was a deafening silence, only lasted for a few seconds but lasted for what felt like eternity, like I already knew what the answer was gonna be.
“You’re not gonna like it.”
Click
I immediately headed towards our GM discussion board. A couple of teams immediately came to my mind but there was only one that made me scared.
No
Shoeless is typing in the chat…
NO
“Sorry about your preview Ron.”
NOOOOOO
Right away I felt as though the Pacific division just got even more tougher again. Now I sit here wondering, “Should I have taken the gamble? Sure he’s 36 and may begin declining but surely he could’ve helped me now.”
At this point I’ve been awake for too damn long, I’m gonna head to bed. After all, maybe this is just a nightmare. Maybe I’ll wake up tomorrow and it will have never happened. Right?

Re: 2057-3 Long Morning
Sorry Aaron! I dont bluff in the BBA. Poker, sure, but not here. I tried giving some non-front running teams the opportunity, those teams that are right on the brink but need that one more piece. I even gave them warnings when they said they might circle back at the deadline, that Wullenweber wouldnt be around by then. I even lowered my asking price (for some) but once Shoeless was open to adding Joffer into the mix, I knew we were headed towards a deal.
On the bright side, the asking price for Dallas Dixon is lower than it was for Wullenweber. He cant pitch but he can surely there are plenty of teams that could use the #4 ranked 2B.

Haha was a fun time negotiating though even if the end result never happened.GoldenOne wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 8:01 amSorry Aaron! I dont bluff in the BBA. Poker, sure, but not here. Ik I’m sorry. I had to take a break from bashing Chad in my stories.

Blessing in disguise. Wullenweber lost 3 tiers of velocity in the past year. He's about to fall hard. Granted he has a lot further to fall than most and might have a decent season.

I love the concept of writing about deals that didn't get done. Mmm...
No joke, I suck at voting for best article of the year, but I hope to remember this one. The passion and anxiety - and insights - that go into making a deal are among my favorite parts of the game.
OK, now who's ready to make me a real offer for you know who?

Certainly a Caleb’s nominee.JimSlade wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 4:46 pmI love the concept of writing about deals that didn't get done. Mmm...

Re: 2057-3 Long Morning
Crazy how I was worried about his decline when entering the fifth season since this he's still one of the best in the league..
