The first round of the Brewster Baseball Association playoffs are named in honor of legendary general manager Joe Geoghegan, aka @scottsdale_joe. Geoghegan took over for Vancouver in 1996, a middling club coming off of a 57-105 season. Within four years, Geoghegan took the Mounties to the mountain top, going 102-60 in 1999 and winning their first of two consecutive Landis Trophies. In fourteen seasons at the helm of the west coast club, Geoghegan amassed a record of 1284-984 (.566), an average of 92 wins per season. Mind you, in the 23 years before Geoghegan took over, Vancouver reached the 92-win mark once in it's franchise history. Under Geoghegan, the Mounties reached the playoffs ten times in fourteen years, including four appearances in the Landis and the aforementioned two titles.
Geoghegan would surface again in the BBA, still in Canada but this time with then-Halifax (now Nashville), where he spend five or so years in the front office. Just when Geoghegan was starting to fade from the memory of Brewster general managers past and present, he popped up for a short stint in Cairo of all places, finding solace in the UMEBA. During his tenure in the Brewster, Geoghegan would become a valuable member of the Governing Board as Assistant Commissioner, an even lower paying job than the top honor.
When he stepped down from his role in Cairo in 2021, he kindly notified the league that he, 81-years young, was planning to live in rural County Kerry, Ireland with his wife. In real life, Geoghegan -- a humble US Army veteran -- was a diehard Boston sports fan (having been in attendance of the Celtic's first ever NBA championship in 1957.
