Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
I'm not going to go off on this like I did in the ORB2. In a fictional league, I don't think it's that big a deal. However, I would like to tweak it slightly, to make it more fair for the teams who actually deserve the high picks the next season, and give at least some penalty for not signing your player. The default compensation picks are guaranteed to be the EXACT draft position of the season before, no matter who it displaces. As an example, this means that if your record would have given you the 15th pick in a round and several teams failed to sign players from that round the year before, you could actually end up picking AFTER the team who had the 18th pick in that round the year before.
Here are my two suggestions, my preference is the first:
1) Teams who fail to sign their draft picks are given picks at the end of the round in which they failed to sign the player. For example: if only one team failed to sign their draft pick in round 1, the next year their draft slot would be the 25th pick in round one.
2) Teams who fail to sign their draft pick are given the pick directly AFTER the team that would have drafted in that same slot the following year, if there were no compensatory picks. For example: Team A fails to sign the 1st overall draft pick. Team B fails to sign the 6th overall draft pick. The draft order is determined by taking the 24 team draft order finish from that season and then placing Team A after the 1st team and Team B directly after the 6th team. Thus, in the following season, team A will have the second overall pick and Team B would have the 8th overall pick.

Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
Like I said in ORB, everybody can do it... so it's not a fairness issue. Let it be.
Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
And like I said above, I'm only suggesting a tweak like option 2 to bring it more in line with the way that MLB actually does it, although MLB limits the compensation to just once for any given pick, while OOTP will compensate you every year even if you fail to sign your compensation pick.Railroad_Ross wrote:Like I said in ORB, everybody can do it... so it's not a fairness issue. While I think the issue is critically important in the ORB2 because it's an historical league, I don't think it's that big of a deal here.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean, maybe I still don;t understand the issue.elligator wrote:MLB limits the compensation to just once for any given pick, while OOTP will compensate you every year even if you fail to sign your compensation pick.
Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
The way the OOTP11 system works: if you fail to sign the #1 overall pick, you will receive the #1 overall pick in the next season's draft as compensation. And you will also have your regular pick in the draft as well. If you then fail to sign the #1 overall pick you got as compensation, you will again be awarded the #1 overall pick in the following draft as compensation for failing again...and so on for eternity. Thus, a team that finds itself lucky enough to have the #1 overall pick can continue to roll that pick over in subsequent years as the #1 overall pick each time, so long as they fail to sign that pick each year, until they get the player they want some year down the road. Until they choose and sign a player as the #1 overall pick, no other team will ever get the chance to pick #1 overall in a draft. And there's absolutely no risk involved as eventually that #1 overall player will be a legend. In fact, there is absolutely no risk for any pick as you can keep not signing the players until you find one you like and always have your draft slot locked in.
At least in a fictional league there's a chance that a player might not develop, not so in an historical league, where the guys come ready to play out of the box.
In addition if you fail to sign all your picks for a few years, you will be set up to rebuild like a monster, with several picks in every round. It offers the ultimate in tanking and rebuilding technology. A scheme Lyons would be jealous of.

Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
So a team willing to sacrifice a number one pick for several seasons can select a player down the line... I doubt it will happen much and even if it does it's not a smart move. I don't see this as that huge.
Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
agreed, Ross, in this league not that big of a deal b/c you never know if you are passing up a better player than may be available next season. Only a suggestion for tweaking here the ORB2 is another matter.Railroad_Ross wrote:So a team willing to sacrifice a number one pick for several seasons can select a player down the line... Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
Funny, I brought up the "what's to stop me from just intentionally not signing this guy and hope for a better class" in the GUBA too.
No one was too concerned about it though....

Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
Yeah, but the big difference is...here, how would you know??? And if you were going to do that, why would you? I mean, look at Bullrush. Would you not sign him simply because you "think" someone would be better???
I think the chances of this happening are remote.

Indeed, I agree with both you and Ross in this league. It is remote. I think I was only offering suggestions here because I about lost my damn mind in the ORB2. Consider this to be spillover.recte44 wrote:Yeah, but the big difference is...here, how would you know??? And if you were going to do that, why would you? I mean, look at Bullrush. Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
The only person I think who would abuse this is Lyons, who can finally keep his future from ever coming through the minors this way.

Re: Draft Signing Bonus Suggestion
Something I thought about suggesting in the ORB2 was go with a +10 rule. If you choose not to sign your pick, then you move down 10 slots with the compensation pick next year. This way, you're encouraged to sign your pick, but if you don't/can't, you'll get a pick in return, but 10 slots later than the current year's pick.
