Deshown Yoder, Greenville's talented #2 pick, played hardball during the signings bonus period, and it's going to end up burning him. He failed to come to terms with Greenville before the deadline, and will re-enter the draft next season. This was a strategic move on Greenville's part, as the though of investing 3-4 million into him, at the ripe age of 24, seemed like a more risky proposition than just taking someone in the same round next season. Despite that risk, Greenville did try to come to terms with Yoder, shortchanging him on his demands a little bit, in the hopes of working something out. But as his clock kept running, eliminating the chance he'd get any minor league time this season, we broke off all talks, and decided to let him walk.
This was the only draft pick that we had difficulties with. It will be up to the other top picks, Esparza and Empire, to ensure that the 1995 draft is one that improves the Shiners long term. I'm excited with my farm, as-is, and not too heartbroken to miss out on Yoder, who had we understood the dynamic of the signing bonus program, we probably would not have picked.

I love the way this works. Now you get an extra pick next year....we'll hope it works.
