Understanding ratings
Hey all,
Reviewing my team and starting to get acclimated to the league.
I'm having some trouble understanding ratings here since it's different than I am used to.
My understanding is that the individual ratings (contact, gap, etc.) are not relative to any other players and represent a raw value, while the OVR/POT numbers are relative to others in the league.
Is that correct? Any help is appreciated.

OVR/POT ratings used to be relative, but that is no longer the case. We switched from relative ratings several years ago. If you saw something in the Constitution saying otherwise, please let us know so it can be fixed.
Also, just get a lineup full of 80’s and it won’t matter either way

Re: Understanding ratings
Thanks for the insight, good to know. I don't recall anything in the constitution mentioning ratings at all.
So if my understanding is correct, players at different levels w/ the same ratings should perform similarly regardless of level? Perhaps I'm also adjusting to how high the talent bar seems to be in the league -- not used to seeing so many good ratings.

Re: Understanding ratings
Players with the same ratings will perform differently at different levels, since the rating is not changing depending on the level. A 45 rated player won't see much success in the majors, but would be a monster on a rookie team.pandan wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 1:26 pmThanks for the insight, good to know. Hopefully I'm interepreting your question correctly.
And yes there is a bit of ratings bloat in the league right now, and we're working to normalize it.

Re: Understanding ratings
Thanks Lane. Yes, that helps.
Makes sense, that's good to know. Out of curiosity, what happened and how can it be normalized? Appreciate the help as I build context.

Re: Understanding ratings
I think one of the contributing factors was contracting the old UMEBA league and bringing that talent into the BBA. As for what can be done, I'm not an expert by any means but I think it's mostly a matter of making sure that we don't have bloated drafts and just waiting it out for players to age and retire.

Makes sense, sounds like it'll normalize a bit over time. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Understanding ratings
Bringing this back up because I'm struggling with the ratings a bit, as well. Can I ask why you went away from relative ratings? Wouldn't making them relative be a way to normalize it?

Re: Understanding ratings
Welcome to the shit show!
Kidding aside, this was a major challenge for me too when I joined the league a few seasons ago. Below are a few helpful recent threads. I can't find it, but somewhere either Lane or James (for whatever reason I cannot keep these two division rivals separate) did a comparison of how good the prospects are today vs like 10 years ago and there are *significantly* fewer 70+ POT prospects today than then. Basically, there were some drafts 15 years ago that were way too loaded with talent and as a result our league is dominated by hitters 33-35 years old. The drafts are much weaker now and the age restrictions being put in place should help force more older players to retire so we expect this to slowly resolve itself over the next few years.
An Argument For Relative Ratings
Comparing current BBA players overall vs prospects potential.

Re: Understanding ratings
you could probably search around for some spirited discussion, but the gist of it is that OOTP does not do a good job of handling relative ratings. and they tend to fluctuate a lot throughout the season/offseason cycle.
