Valencia Star Report: Off Season # 2

Post by leejay56 » Fri Oct 14, 2011 8:51 pm

The Stars looking to add more pop to there lineup, get some bullpen help and add a catcher were all done this off season....The minors doing really have much in any of those area's so hopefully this will fill a few holes for now....
The off season started with a huge surprise...Vet outfielder and future HOFer Gary Barr
decided not to go into free agency and opted for a 1-year contract through arbitration worth a total of $12,568,500. So Barr who has 3,196 hits so far if healthly can get 3,300 hits by the year end...If Barr can do that it would put him only behind Steve Collins who has 3,529 hits...

FREE AGENT SIGNINGS

1. CF Ryan Sittler, Sittler[28] comes over from the California Crusaders where he played for 7 years...He is not the same guy but could give the Stars 350 to 400 AB and possible 15 to 18 homeruns...Sittler is an excellent CF and LF too...

2. 2B Mack Randall, Randall was really not on Valencia FA list but was out there so we made an offer...The Stars will have him for 3 years and they have and option for a 4th year...At 33 the Stars are hopeing they can get 3 good years from him even if he hits .260 20 homers 80 plus RBIS that will help score more runs....

3. RP John Oloughlin, The Stars are hoping Oloughlin with a change of location will do well here...Oloughlin will set in as the long guy and if someone goes down can step into that role too...

4. C Doug Flowers, The Stars really needed some help at catcher...Flowers was picked up a week before the season started and will be there starting catcher for now...Flowers an average D cather can give the Stars some pop too, hoping to get 10 homers from him...

Also you will see a few new faces this season....RP pitchers, Deshawn Pines and lefty Tom Jimerson will get there shot...Also player number 27 will be vet infielder Jeffrey Osborne.....

Barr is a machine. If I had him I would keep playing him until he dropped. If he keeps hitting around .300 for 1 or 2 seasons and then can hit .240-.280 for 2 or 3 more years after that, he can end up with 3800+ hits.

Yeah those two injured years he had took away about 200 hits unfortunately. It looks like it might take a while for his contact rating to get to 12. And even at 12 he can hit about .250-260. Hopefully he doesn't retire or take massive ratings hits.
