Daniel Kerber, LF
In other news, the sky is falling...
To Calgary:
SP Johnny Madorin
To Las Vegas:
SP Lorenzo Morales
LF Daniel Kerber
2B Francisco Cruz
RP Paul "Worm" Hogan
SP Francis Linares
Why? That was the sentiment across most of the league. Why trade a bonafide ace? Moreso, why trade him within your division? Furthermore, why trade him to your main rival?
1) While the loss of Madorin certainly hurts, I wasn't going to go anywhere with him here and Stoller out until midseason 2001.
2) Calgary is going to have some salary issues in the next few years. When they do, their farm system and depth became much less from this deal.
3) Sure, Madorin > Morales, but by how much? Going by VORP, about 2x. Ok, so how much better is Daniel Kerber than Ian Botham? Again going by VORP, about 38x!!! Soak that in. Out of these two positions, which one affects the team every day? LF. Madorin plays every fifth game. Clear win.
4) So if I've already improved my team overall from exchanging Madorin for Morales, which resulted in Botham for Kerber, and I've gained multiple VORP here.....then let's take a look at all the "extras". THere's Norbert Rich, who with RP spec bonus will become one of the better young relievers in the MBBA. There's Hogan, who if he can bounce back from injury has what OOTP says is "Hall of Fame potential". There's Cruz, who I lusted after in the last draft and has all the tools to be a superstar someday, though I may have to spend some points on his work ethic. He turns out, he becomes Urban's replacement in 3 seasons or so. And finally, to address my lack of depth in AAA, LInares offers me that swingman starter I've lacked since Stoller got hurt.
Do all my moves make more sense now? DIscuss!
