1999 Landis Memorial Series

Post by recte44 » Sun Mar 20, 2011 9:41 pm

Buffalo Bison vs. Vancouver Mounties

Both of these teams have been scorching hot in the postseason. Buffalo is 8-2, while Vancouver has been 8-1 (including a four game sweep of favored Madison).

Game 1 features two of the best pitchers in the MBBA, with Buffalo sending Amen "Constantine" Mitrani to the hill against Vancouver's Robbie "Silent Bob" Sargent.

Game 1:

Amen Mitrani vs. Robbie Sargent looks like a great pitching matchup. Mitrani was 3-0 in the postseason coming into this game. Sargent, however, was 1-1. In the top of the third Buffalo got 3 runs across the plate. Giving Mitrani a three run lead this early usually equals smooth sailing. That was the case, as Buffalo won it 5-2, giving Mitrani his fourth win of the playoffs.
Buffalo leads series, 1-0.

Game 2: BUF (Melvin Ripken) vs VAN (Shane Wookey)

The converted closer Ripken takes on one of the best "#2" starters in the game. Here we go....

Arturo Gutierrez, who hit a pinch hit homer in the bottom of the ninth yesterday which led Buffalo to bring in Richard Wasson to close it out, hit a 2 run dinger in the bottom of the 2nd and there was no looking back for Vancouver. Wookey scattered nine hits over nine innings, giving up just one unearned run for a complete game, 6-1 Mounties win.

Series tied, 1-1 as we go to Buffalo.

Game 3:

Vancouver (Ben "Martini" Welch) vs Buffalo (Ken Gladden).

This matchup is a young up and coming hurler vs. a veteran in Gladden.

Douglas Newhouse created havoc at the plate and on the basepaths, as Vancouver grabbed an early 3-0 lkead by the third inning. Walsh cruised in this one, going eight innings of one run ball with 9 K's before giving way to the studly closer Jason Egan, who put Buffalo away in the ninth for a 4-1 Vancouver victory.

Vancouver leads series, 2 games to 1.

Game 4: Each team going with a 3 man staff. Interesting. So it's a matchup of Game 1, Mitrani vs Sargent. Let's see what happens.

Scoreless through three innings, Vancouver got to Mitrani in the fourth with a leadoff Nick Mannerden double followed by a 2 run homer by Newhouse. Buffalo scored in the bottom of fifth, however in the top of the seventh the Mounties played small ball and got three more runs to take a 5-1 lead.

That's the way it would end, as Sargent neutralized "the Mitrani effect" with eight strong innings of work and put Buffalo against the wall.

Vancouver leads series, 3 games to 1.

Game 5: Wookey vs. Ripken, part 2.

9 innings, 6 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 9 strikeouts...and a 4-0 postseason record. That's all we can say about Shane Wookey, who just pitched Vancouver to the MBBA title!

Vancouver wins series, 4 games to 1.

Congratulations to Joe and his Mounties on an amazing season!!

Thanks again to everyone for the well wishes.
I still can't believe we went 12-2 in the playoffs.
Yikes.
