JL RoY Candidates: Follow-up and new faces

Post by cheekimonk » Sat Mar 19, 2011 7:06 pm

Now that the regular season is behind us, let's take a look back at my mid-season list of JL RoY candidates and see how they wrapped up 1999.

OF Casey Martin

Image

At mid-season, Martin was hitting at a .373 clip with an OPS of 1.072. He finished the season, though, at .295 and .847, 14 HRs, and 9 SB. All not bad, of course, for a rookie, but I'm not sure he gets in the discussion for RoY with those numbers.

SP Jean-Phillipe Te'treault

Image

Te'treault finished the season with 21 of his 31 starts being quality starts (67.7%). He held his strong ERA pretty steady, ending up at 3.72, and his WHIP improved to 1.35. He only had an 11-10 record, but I personally don't look too closely at W/L when evaluating a pitcher. I think he's earned a spot on the ballot.

SP Steven McCullough

Image

McCullough had to be on anyone's shortlist at the mid-year point with an ERA of 2.71 and WHIP of 1.26. However, it looks like he wasn't quite up to a full MBBA season as he crossed the finish line at 4.67 and 1.46. And, as much as I don't look at W/L, it's hard to ignore that he went 1-10 since the midpoint.

P Michael Duran

Image

Duran had a WHIP of 1.06 when I first compiled this list. He finished the season at 1.01. Toss in an ERA of 2.86 and 200 Ks in 192 innings and it's evident that Duran was ready for the bright lights. He'll have to be in the discussion as well.

P Steve Taub

Image

The 2nd Crusader on the initial list, Taub kept it up the rest of the season and finished with an ERA of 3.13, a WHIP of 1.03, and 38 BBs in 230 IP. That's 230 IP for a rookie! His final record was 16-10.

P Oscar Funke

Image

Funke has stayed true to his form from mid-season, delivering an ERA of 3.5 and a WHIP of 1.4, but he didn't really do anything to separate himself from the pitchers above him in this list.

New candidates:

Arturo Guitierrez

Image

The only player I could find to add to my initial list, Guitierrez played in 102 games for the Mounties. He delivered a .316 BA, .390 OBP ( ), and a .880 OPS. He slammed 10 HRs, but I don't know that he has the kind of resume to top the rookie list for the JL.

My vote is Taub.
I agree Gutierrez doesn't have the numbers for Rookie of the Year.
The initial plan was for him to get more seasonings and play regularly in AAA this year.
But he won a spot as backup first baseman based on his spring training.
When Mannerden went down for the year at the All Star break, he converted to third base and was instrumental in keeping the Mounties near the top of the heap.
Don't know where we'd be without him.
He actually makes Mannerden potentially expendable to trade in the off season.

Neither Taub or Funke is a rookie, either.

With that, this clearly goes to Duran.

Though Govea's complete games and shutouts made me think a bit.

I voted Govea third behind Duran and Gutierrez. The three shutouts are impressive though.
