pre-2001 trade: Hurley from Madison to Hawaii
pre-2001 trade: Hurley from Madison to Hawaii
This is one trade I would like to have back:
Hawaii sends:
C Kevin Bulder and CL Byron Gonzalez
Madison sends:
C Hurley Reyes
That was a transfer of $11,000,000 (Hurley) per year for $600,000 a year, at least initially.
Former Hawaii remarks:
"I finally get the power bat that I've been seeking, and at not too bad of a cost, although Gonzalez will be a great closer in the future."
Madison admits it is a salary dump of Reyes.
Now I probably gotta dump Reyes's salary! HI is losing money every year.... Maybe Reyes brought in more fans I dunno. And I am bit afraid of fan reaction if I trade Reyes, seeing how he is mega-popular locally and nationally. We don't really need a fall off in fan interest. But I will lose him to free agency next season anyway.
But as for 2001 offensive numbers, Reyes and Bulder were almost the same in 2001. Wow.
Reyes:
Bulder:
and add
ByGonz, who Hi desperately needs in the pen, where we have 2 or 3 starters servings as MR:
Maybe who knew how well Bulder would do, I dunno. But on the other hand, HI already had a decent catcher:
Behnke who was signed through 2004.
But I know the potential of landing a superstar would be tempting, especially for a team that was treading wheels. Problem is, it is still treading wheels, now with less money. Anyway, that's just Alan's ANALysis. After the fact.
Oh well, let bygonz be bygonz!

For me, that trade made no sense from Hawaii's perspective when it was made. Why trade for a $11M catcher when you have a minimum salary one just like him, especially when you aren't going to contend.

Re: pre-2001 trade: Hurley from Madison to Hawaii
Actually, I thought it was a great trade. Hawaii really needed a consistent cleanup hitter, and while Reyes didn't hit well last year, he did hit well at home; he had over a .900 OPS at home. He hit a ridiculous .190 on the road.
I'd do that deal if I had the available cash.

That's the thing- they didn't. So why not just give Bulder a shot?

I agree with Matt but if Al can turn Reyes into a decent prospect or two it might work out in the end.

Oh AL, you're going to get really upset if you investigate what you gave up to get Behnke.
Granted, Avila has developed out of nowhere, but still. Sometimes trading for the sake of trading really can come back to bite a team.

That trade didn't make sense with a pre-bump Avila. Were these made by the same GM? SMDH....

Cornel, the absentee governing board member who wanted to create his own league with Ryan Collins, but both managed to disappear and fall off the planet. IF you can't run a team, how can you run a league..?

Re: pre-2001 trade: Hurley from Madison to Hawaii
I accomplished everything I wanted out of that deal. I was able to trade away reyes's salary while not losing any of the offensive production. Bulder hit either 7th or 8th for me all season and was great in that role. Gonzalez's addition to my bullpen was an added bonus.
But the main part of the deal was dumping Reyes's salary which "could" allow me to keep both Kengos and Puckett for many, many years. And perhaps Vanderhugen as well.

Frankly speaking, I hope we've seen the last of Collins. Cornel I'd take back in a minute.

AWOL owners who also try to undercut the league aren't my favs though.

Re: pre-2001 trade: Hurley from Madison to Hawaii
Oddly enough, the Kiplinger trade turned out okay. Faulkner absolutely exploded in two seasons, and Feldmann and Pridemore could be worse. I still think it was a dumb trade, because he was taking a massive risk, but Faulkner's development made it passable.
Re: pre-2001 trade: Hurley from Madison to Hawaii
I did read Behnke's history last night and just shrugged my shoulders and watched some more Seinfeld. haha Yeah, that was another deal that seems not the greatest.recte44 wrote:Oh AL, you're going to get really upset if you investigate what you gave up to get Behnke.

Yeah, well, if we can offload a couple other high contracts we could keep Reyes for fan interest and give them somebody to cheer about when they come to see us play.KCCardinalFan wrote:I agree with Matt but if Al can turn Reyes into a decent prospect or two it might work out in the end.
I didn't know he hit less than .200 on the road. Guess he likes Hawaii.

Seems like a bad trade for a financially strapped team.
But maybe the old owners bad moves are the reason you now get to be GM. Work your magic.
Good luck with your Hawaii Five-0 garage sale !

Yeah I agree Upton. Theres no real pressure taking over a poor team, as long as you have patience then there's not really a lot to lose, it's a great way to get your feet wet at your own pace.
