THE GOOD NEWS: TOP HURLER DOES NOT REQUIRE SURGERY

July 16, 2063 -- The Bikini Krill medical staff has confirmed that starter Takashi Nakamura suffered "only" a strained elbow, and is expected to respond to rest and therapy without the need for surgery. "Overall, it's good news for us," said the Krill's cloned manager Kate Fiscus. "I expect him to return at about the trade deadline, so that should be like making a big deal."

It was the ultimate Glass is Half Full kind of statement, because the injury could not have come at a more difficult timejust as the Pacific division leading team from the atoll is losing its mojo, and just as the rest of the division seems to be getting hold of theirs.

Could Injury Have Happened Earlier?

League pundits are pondering the question of whether Nakamura's injury has been building for some time, however, as the right-hander has been in a funk for a couple of weeks and has had difficulty getting out of the fourth inning. His ERA had risen from 3.76 at the end of June to 4.20 as he left the field in Yellow Springs after 70 pitches in only 3.2 innings.

"If so, you would expect Nakmura to say something," said Misty Morgan, FLSN's baseball desk anchor. "You have to wonder if the team knew he was hurt when they sent him out there."

"That's a shitty thing to say," Fiscus spat back as soon as she heard about the question. "My guys' health has always been a top priority for me. I make sure every pitcher gets a proper rubdown after every game. Takashi's no exception. Someone should get fired for a statement like that."

She had nothing to say about steps that might be taken to fill Nakamura's roster spot, but it's not worthy of note that both Nelson Williams and Paul Glass had mediocre outings when she chose to start them on short rest, which throws cold water on the idea of going to a straight 4-man rotation. Options include starting Herman Deckard--who has already made two spot starts to some reasonable effect, or calling up AAA starting prospect Jose Guevara. Some have even advocated jumping one-time 1st round pick Jacky Lavergne straight out of AA.

Some are whispering that the team really should consider finding a trade partner to bring in a true top-of-the-order arm.

"We'll fall back as an organization and make a decision that we think is best," Fiscus said. "Whatever it is, the front office gets the final say."

In the meantime, the Krill are sinking like a rotting ship caught in a kraken's maelstrom.
