The Hawaii Tropics offense came out firing with 5 homers to spoil Opening Day for the San Fernando Bears. Chico’s went quiet when Trops CF Carlos Sanchez laubched his first of two homers on the day. Sanchez hit another in the 5th inning and was 3 for 5 while scoring three runs. Jorge Dodd, Carlos Shumann and rookie catcher Armando Medina each homered.
Vicente ‘Yogi’ Martinez was 3 for 4 with a double, a walk and scored two runs.
Veteran starter Semih Gurani made the Opening Day start going 3.2 innings allowing a run on two hits. He walked four and struck out one in a no decision. Jose Ordonez pitched his 1st game since May of last season throwing two clean innings with three Ks.
Stat of the Day- The Tropics stole five bases with Martinez and Schumann swiping two bases apiece and Vincente Mendez stealing one.

Tropics pitchers combine to shutout the Bears on six hits to assure a series win for Hawaii. Martin ‘Lumps’ Garcia began the game with 4.1 scoreless innings giving up four hits, a walk and struck out a couple of batters. Jose ‘Mr. Reliable’ Valle earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings allowing a hit with a K. Bob Westbrooks picked up his 1st save of the season with two scoreless innings issuing a walk and fanning two.
Mitch Wareham was 1 for 4 with an RBI double in the 1st off Chapa. Eric Owens remains hitless so far but was 0 for 1 with three free passes and an RBI.
Stat of the Day- Even more stolen bases a Owens and Mendez each take a bag.

The Tropics put up 11 runs on the Bears to seal the deal on a series sweep. Vicente Martinez blasted his 1st homer of the season in the 8th inning going 2 for 5 with an RBI and scored two runs. Mitch Wareham was 2 for 4 with a three-run shot in the 8th as the Tropics began to pour it on.
On the mound, Ruben bin Majid al Din was successful in his 1st career start as a Tropic going 5.2 innings giving up just three hits with two Ks. Reynaldo Trinidad took a little bit of a beating in relief of al Din allowing a couple of runs on four hits and a walk in 1.1 innings. Harry Edwards took over from there giving up a hit in two innings to finish off the Bears.
The Tropics sweep the three-game series.
