Slow Growth Raises Hopes
WILL TEAM ADD RAMOS TO THE 40-MAN?

September 25, 2062 | Lake City > To anyone who has been watching the details of time as it passes, from the moment Tomas Ramos signed a deal to come to the Bikini International Complex he has been an enigma wrapped in enigmas. Will he be able to hit? Can he cover center field? The naysayers have always had the upper hand, of course. On first glance the skills don't whip your head around but the team likes his attitude and work ethic.

Along the way, scouts have upped their thoughts, then dropped them right back down.

But somehow he's mostly made the numbers grow.

His 19 year old season in R-Ogden (.132/.168/.171) had the young man from Spain considering if he needed a plane ticket home. But having a ghost of a chance to play center means you get a lot of leeway, and the following two seasons were strong enough progressions (.291 wOBA > .324 wOBA) that he was given a 26 plate appearance taste at Short A ball in Port au Prince. When he posted a .417 batting average and added a bit of defensive range in that shot, hopes soared.

Then Came Reality?

Alas, 2062 was not Ramos's year. He spent six weeks on the Injured List with a strained oblique, and the numbers faded. Proving that the numbers aren't everything, however, the team's internal assessments are mostly positive, with reports saying the club expects greater power from his bat and noting his plate discipline could well improve with a little work. Despite his physical issues, the glove was good, too.

So, where does that leave us?

With the long and winding road that Ramos has been taking that leads to the Atoll's Come Together Door, the team faces the issue of needing to either put the 22-year-old onto their 40-man roster, or leave him open to the selection process. It's a bit of a quandary. Given his .171/.226/.271 slash in Port au Prince, there is no world in which he is ready for a big league job, but there is always the chance that some team would take him as a fishing expedition and see what happened. And given that he can, at least at the short-A level, play center field, some grace needs to be given. His bat is not expected to be award quality, but a 5/5/6/5/6/7 in center field would likely project to something above average for the role.

There's also a bigger numbers game going on here, as the Krill have a wave of younger players coming along, and currently only four slots open. There's a lot of time to play out and the numbers could well change, but the situation is setting up a particularly interesting Rubik's cube game of musical chairs for the front office to deal with.

So, what's the scoop for you?

Does Ramos get a billet?

He's still young enough he could get close to those potentials, but it's been along haul.
