34-year-old McKinley Washington recorded his 30th save of the season, 400th of his
career, and 3rd in 4 days (all versus the Bobwhites) when he induced slugger Mike Clarke
to send a line drive to centerfield whiz Al Hughes to clinch a 5-2 Hawai'i victory. Clarke
(.361-20-59) went 0-5.

Moments earlier Bobwhites Doug Byrd struck out on a full count on which base runner Derek
McCall
was nailed at 2nd by catcher Hurley Reyes on a failed hit-and-run. Byrd had fouled
off three pitches before whiffing.

Rene Moncada (8-10, 4.09) picked up the win and Ron Burgundy (4-6, 4.06), the loss, as
Hawai'i defeated Washington for the fourth day in a row in the first of the three here in DC
after the Tropics swept the Bobwhites on O'ahu.

2b Robert Cullison was 4-5 with two doubles. All 5 of Hawaii's runs were scored with two
outs, including 3 in the 1st inning that gave the Tropics a lead they never relinquished.

Hawai'i has now evened the season series between the two teams at 5 wins.

Washington was acquired 2 years and 23 days ago in a 9-player deal that saw fellow closer
David "DVD" van Dongen go to California for the stretch run. Neither McWash nor DVD had
been effective for their teams in 2003 before the swap.

Washington saved 11 games the last two months of the season for Hawai'i. In 2004, he
suffered a spring training injury that limited his playing time to 29 regular season games,
in which he was 1-3 with 12 saves and a 6 ERA.

He has appeared in 58 games this season with a record of 1-3, 2.23.

And 30 saves.

He has a WHIP of less than 1 and a K/9 of over 10.
