Hurler Vows To Return By Playoffs
August 29, 2061: Forever Land The Bikini Krill beat the San Fernando Bears today, scoring six runs to the Bears' four. The victory was critical, as San Fernando represents one of the teams most difficult barriers on the way to acquiring the postseason slot. Unfortunately, they may have lost a lot more.
Starting pitcher Brody Picot walked off the field in the first inning nursing his shoulder. Later the diagnosis would be unfortunate. An in dugout MRI scan revealed a higher than moderate bicep strain that team position say will keep Picot off the field for at least five weeks. That five weeks is also unfortunate, as it would suggest that the pitcher will not be available in any first round matchup if the team does achieve that lofty assignment in the postseason exhibition season.
"Don't believe them," the pitcher said. "If we're in the playoffs I'm going to be pitching. Go ahead and jot that down. We've come too far to let something like this get in the way."
It may be worth noting that Picot signed a one season deal at the beginning of the year, and suggested at the time that he would be focused on going to the free agent market after the season was over. However he seems to have had a change of heart, and for the past two months has been lobbying the team to sign him to a multi year deal. One might think that this injury could sour his future with the club.
Assistant general manager Monica Green said that such conversation was "speculative in premature." She suggested that the teams' front office was focused completely on the near term task at hand, and had no comment on what the pitching staff might look like in 2062.
In that light, the Picot injury certainly puts a damper on the conversation. At 8-8, and with a 4.01 ERA, numbers that come along with a are you bending 74 FIP-, it's arguable that Picot has been the team's most consistent pitcher all year. The loss, when combined with news of john brown's injury a month ago depletes the rotation that was already looking a little haggard. Angel Villanueva pitched well in his first outing with the team, which gives some relief from the fans tension but it leaves many to think that Francisco Ortiz is the likely next man up, and Ortiz has not had a comfort making season so. This sentiment has rolled through the teams virtual media platforms for the past 24 hours, most people bemoaning the end of the season and noting that they just haven't been able to beat even Portland, so what's the point?
First year manager Kate fiscus admonished the fans for that kind of attitude.
"We'll beat them when it matters the most," she said tersely.
