2061-9 My first ever FA signing retires

Flashback to when I was a young plucky GM in 2055 going into my first full offseason. I had just fleeced Chad for Tony Frost and Jorge Gutierrez, and going into free agency I knew I needed to upgrade my center-field. Like most years the choices were pretty barebones. However there was one player that did catch my eye.

Ramon Moreno

Moreno had an interesting career before being signed by me. He originally signed as a minor league free agent to the Sao Paulo Pilots in 2044 at the age of 16 to be in their IC. He eventually developed into a solid player by 2049, being drafted by the now defunct Riyadh Red Crescents in the UMEMBA (GBC) Rule 5 draft. In his first season in the GBC, he had a modest .226/.312//.317 stat line with a ZR of 10 in center field. At this point he became the #1 ranked prospect in the GBC, which attracted the attention of the Charm City Jimmies. You see after that one season Ramon opted for Free Agency in 2051 and signed a 1 year, $5,800,000 contract with the Jimmies. Finally, a chance to show he belonged in the BBA. Unfortunately for Moreno that's not what happened. He spent most of the year in AAA after a disappointing 18 games in the BBA. This lead to Charm City releasing him at the end of the season to little fanfare.

Due to lack of BBA interest, Moreno went back to the GBC, signing a one year, $4 million contract with the Cairo Pharaohs. Not sure if what happened next was a gaff but he wasn't place on their 40 man in time for the Rule 5 draft two weeks later, and so, he was picked up by the team that originally brought him in, the Sao Paulo Pilots. He rewarded them with 3 seasons of at least 2 WAR baseball, including a whopping 4.3 WAR in 2054. Moreno, now 27, once again entered the Free Agent portal. This is where I came in.

After seeing how well he performed in the GBC and with his natural defensive ability, speed and eye, i made an offer of 4 years, $16,000,000. There was risk sure, but at the time I was willing to take them. Moreno accepted the deal and became the new center fielder for the Vancouver Mounties. His first season was very below average with the bat, just .583 OPS, but his fielding was a positive. Though only a ZR of 1, he gunned down a league leading 15 runners. He stole 18 bags being only caught three times. Things would get even better the next two seasons, as his bat began to improve and so did his stealing ability, leading to Moreno leading the entire BBA in steals with 42 in 2057.

Despite a down year in 2058 which saw his bat regress to his first season here, we agreed to a three year extension due to his strong defensive presence. Unfortunately that's when our season from hell happened, and his defense at center field dropped so hard, causing him to finish with a career worst -7 ZR and .930 Def efficiency. His bat was not strong enough to offset his now defensive woes, and I sadly had to release him before the 2060 season. He received no offers throughout the season and just one day after his 33rd birthday, Ramon Moreno announced his retirement during this offseason.

Moreno finished his Mounties career after starting 766 games. He slashed a .237/.308/.308 stat line, and acquired a total of 7 WAR during his 5 seasons in a Mounties uniform, never once finishing a season with a negative WAR. Godspeed to wherever you end up next my friend. Thanks for not being a pain in the ass to sign my first free agency.
