2060-008: Talons 2B Miguel Martinez Has Strong Words for Montreal After Bench Clearing Incident

Montreal, QC--

Apparently, Saturday Night is indeed allright for fighting!

This past Saturday June 12th marked the first time this season the Talons have visited this city astride the St. Lawrence river. In the 7th inning of that contest, Talons 2B Miguel Martinez was hit by a pitch, which ignited an incident that saw suspensions handed down for Martinez as well as the pitcher, Montral's Adam Bristcoe. But Martinez sees more at play here than a simple HBP.

"So yeah, we [the Talons] are already down like four to nothing. And, you remember that hall of famer we have on our team? Anyway, so Zalapa does what he does and hits a solo homer. Nothing fancy, just a high fly ball and makes it over the wall. No big deal, it's only one run. And Zalapa is a pro, he just puts his head down and runs the bases. Simple, right?"

Martinez continued. "Or maybe it wasn't so simple. That homer was given up by their starter, and it's the seventh inning, so we didn't think much of it when they went to the bullpen. Bristcoe is one of their better relievers. We were teammates last season. Good guy. But when I step in, the first pitch I see is at my ass and he plunks me. What the hell, man?"

"I mean, it couldn't have been him. He didn't even give up the homer to Zalapa, the previous guy did that. So it was clearly retaliation. In a game they are still leading by three runs, mind you."

Martinez went on. "SO the only retaliation had to be an order from the bench. It wasn't MY decision to get traded to Phoenix, it was the front office. So why did they target me? What, they didn't want to dust up the 44 year old? Come on. It's just weak sauce. I would have expected better from the Blazers. Last season I didn't have a single problem with any of the guys over there, that I know of. But I guess I was wrong."

But why did Martinez charge the mound? He explains: "Well, you tell me... what would have happened if I didn't? What, they might get a warning? This shit is unacceptable. I had to go out and teach them a lesson. It's not like the league would have done anything if I hadn't."

"So I go out there and have a few words with Bristcoe. I think we were both trying not to laugh at the whole thing. The benches come out but it's not like anyone landed any punches or anything. At the end of the day I get 4 games, Bristcoe gets 8. I guess that's what it takes for this league to finally notice. They need to do a better job of policing retaliatory pitches beofre things get out of hand."

And if they don't?

"Well, I guess I'll have to make sure things get out of hand!" Martinez said.
