2060.18 Charlotte Week 2 Recap

The Flyers started the week with a trip to Atlantic City. The rain fell and the balls flew out of the park during this series.

Game 1: 7-5 Charlotte. There was a 40 minute rain delay in the 5th inning.The Flyers hit 3 home runs and the Gamblers hit 2. For Charlotte, Tadataka Yoshikawa hit two solo shots, one in the 1st and one in the 4th. Jorge Trujillo also hit a solo home run in the 4th inning. For Atlantic City, Michael Pedarzolli hit a 3 run bomb in the 3rd inning and Rule 5 pick Bill Kuhn hit a 2 run shot in the 8th. Mauro Mendoza was having a solid start until that homer by Kuhn. Mendoza ended up allowing 5 runs on 6 hits in 7 innings. His stat line would look much better if he had not come back out and faced two batters in the 8th inning.

Game 2: 6-4 Charlotte in 10 innings. There was no rain in this one but Jorge Trujillo put on an offensive show, going 5 for 5 with 4 singles, a double, and a run scored. Miguel Montero joined in on the fun with a single, 2 triples, and 3 runs batted in. Jacquot Natta pitched 5 strong innings, allowing just 1 run. Brian Whitford was even better for the Gamblers, pitching 8 shutout innings.The difference was the bullpen. Charlottes allowed 3 runs in 5 innings and Atlantic Citys gave up 6 in 2 innings.

Game 3: 9-2 Charlotte. There was a 17 minute rain delay in the 4th inning. Buwono Mainaky pitched 7 outstanding innings, allowing just 1 run and the Charlotte offense ran wild. Lawrence Stewart hit a solo home run in the 2nd. Tadataka Yoshikawa hit a solo home run in the 4th. Robert Menzies hit a 3 run bomb in the 4th. Jacquot Bandit Natta hit a solo home run in the 6th. Mike Cox had 3 hits and stole two bases. Miguel Montero had a single, a stolen base, and his 2nd outfield assist of the season.

The Flyers returned home to take on the reigning Johnson League Champions from Charm City in a 3 game set.

Game 1: 11-2 Charlotte. Jorge Trujillo continued his hot start by going 3-4 with a double, 2 home runs, and 8 RBI.Yoshikawa and Dallas Dixon also had 3 hits in the game. Montero picked up 2 hits as well, bringing his season average to .464. Jim Fleming picked up his 2nd win of the season, allowing just 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings while striking out 8.

Game 2: 5-3 Charm City. The Jimmies ended the Flyers 4 game win streak by scoring early against John Rasmussen III. Little Johnny was tagged for 2 in the 1st on a Dave Ackerman home run and 2 in the 2nd on a Geoffrey Dodson double. Rookie Izz al Din bin Riyad added an insurance run with a solo homer off of Rasmussen in the 6th. Charlotte tried to battle back but could only muster 3 runs, highlighted by a Bandit Natta solo home run in the 6th.

Game 3: 6-5 Charlotte in 13 innings. The teams battled back and forth through the first 10 innings. Mauro Mendoza allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, in 8 innings and the bullpen allowed only 1 run in the next 5 innings combined. Each team hit 1 homer in the game, bin Riyad for Charm City and Natta for Charlotte. Elvan Masûkî, who had made an error allowing an unearned run earlier in the game, came up with the big hit in the 13th, singling to drive in Robert Menzies from third to win the game.

After a great week on the field, the Flyers are now 6-3, tied for first place in the Atlantic Division.
