That's What Cheesehead - 00.12 - Catron Inks Long Term Deal

Post by 7teen » Mon Apr 18, 2011 2:22 pm

The Wolves have been making some key moves over the better part of a few months to try and pave the way for a set of moves like the club just made and announced today. The trading of Chet Steadman and the giving away of Robert Walton for near nothing has cleared some important cap space to make room for some long term extesions. One of those extensions has finally been executed as the Wolves have signed 29 year old 3b John Catron to a 5 year deal.

The 5 year deal will be worth a reported $27.5 million dollars, roughly $5.5 million per season. The first thing of note is that some of you may be wondering why the Wolves would even offer Catron a contract when he is still eligible for free agency, but in an effort to save money in the long run, GM Chris Wilson felt it best to go ahead and sign Catron now.

"This is the first of two or three similar moves we hope to make before this season ends" said Wilson. "Catron did have one more year of arbitration eligibility, but we felt it was in our best interest as a franchise to sign Catron long term. Catron may make more money next season that he would have under aribtration, but over the long term of the deal, we felt it would best help the organization to lose money next year, but save money down the road."

Catron is currently batting .272/.340/.576 with 15 homeruns and an MBBA high 55 RBI. Catron has had a nice career already, no thanks to a late start in his career. Catron didn't break into the big leagues until the age of 25. He's a solid 30 homerun and 100+ RBI guy year in and year out.

Rumors are out that the Wolves are in talks of signing similar arbitration buyout contracts with both Bopper Kengos and Charles Puckett

Smart move, and if you can lock up Puckett and Kengos that's like a historically good infield.

Im trying with Kengos. I actually tried with Puckett, but realized I need to wait 1 more year. No reason in offering him a big deal when he still has 1 more year of his 300K contract.
