Top 5 Prospects for the Baltimore Monarchs

Post by SteveM-A2 » Tue Mar 11, 2014 7:02 pm

#5 Prospect
Inigo Montoya SP
Age: 25
Image
Strengths:
Good Movement on pitches
3 solid pitches

Weaknesses:
Control is weak
Stamina is borderline for a SP

Outlook:
It's hard to get overly optimistic regarding Montoya as an effective starting pitcher with what he's accomplished to date. While his numbers have improved over the past 2 seasons in that batters batted 0.29 points lower in AA than in A ball it's questionable as this age whether he can maintain the upward trend. The good news is he's done better each of the last three seasons and being a Rule V pick he may be worth a roll of the dice.

#4 Prospect
Pedro Silva SP
Age: 25
Image
Strengths:
Commands 3 pitches
29/141 BB/K ratio last year

Weaknesses:
Little movement, marginal stuff and control

Outlook:
When you are 25 years old and you've managed to advance only to Single A you have either been ignored by your management team or your arsenal is so poor that they don't believe you can advance above that level. Okay, new management, new opportunity. Silva is now at AA.

Improved in virtually all areas last year including more IP, lower ERA, lower WHIP, fewer HR's given up, and a winning record. Silva is going to get his opportunity to pitch with mandate that he improve control and work on sink to his fastball.

#3 Prospect
Bob Arnold 2B
Age: 20
Image
Strengths:
Blinding speed
The ability to use that speed to steal bases
Tremendous range and solid turning the DP

Weaknesses:
Marginal Power
Poor plate discipline
Not a good fielder

Outlook:
Arnold hit .290 with a .364 OBP in Single A last year. He swiped 28 bases but was caught 14 times. He's been promoted to AA but will have to up his game if he ever hopes to reach the big leagues. He's young so there is time for the middle infielder who plays both SS and 2B.

#2 Prospect
Omar Sosa SP
Age 19
Image
Strengths:
3 pitches
Excellent Stamina
Velocity 92-94
Good Control Potential

Weaknesses:
Needs to work on holding runners
Stuff is only slightly better than average

Outlook:
This former #1 pick has potential. He took his lumps in rookie ball as he turned in a 1.60 WHIP with batters hitting .338 off him but how much are you going to ask of a kid just out of high school? Omar will stay in rookie ball until he gains confidence but we think that stay will be short. Keep an eye on this kid.

#1 Prospect
Yong-In 'Y.I.' AM Corner OF
Age 23
Image
Strengths:
Projects to hit for average
Power is decent and still developing
Knowledge of base running that translates to stolen bases and taking the extra base
Excellent RF, cannon for an arm

Weaknesses:
Lack of K zone judgement
Doesn't apply himself; needs to work harder at his craft

Outlook:
.330/.368/.512 speaks for itself and these numbrers put Yong-In in the mix for a late season call up. He's clearly the #1 prospect but he's going to have to work to be a star. This South Korean was picked in R2 of the Supplemental draft in 2013 and he is proving that he has the tools to be a major league ballplayer.

Awesome writeup... I love watching prospects move up through the ranks.

You should move this thread over to Baltimore's team news though... how do you pick which thread to post to?! lol..
