In a deal that shocked the BBA Boise GM Ben Teague today pulled the trigger on a trade with Yellow Springs for second baseman Juan Silva. They paid a high price shipping #1 prospect RP Cornelio Martínez, catcher Ka-pa 'Buckeye' She, and third baseman Hanbal bin Khaldun to the Nine. "This was dealing from a position of need," said Teague. "Silva is a young guy who is solid at the plate and with the glove. It's always tough parting with a prospect like Martínez but we have long-term fixtures with [Alfredo] Morán, [Máximo] Rivera, and [Mario] Santos in our pen. Like shortstops, second basemen are difficult to acquire and we wanted to avoid the free agent option this coming offseason."

The reaction from BBA fans has been quick and merciless with many calling for Teague's head on a platter. So much so that a sizeable crowd gathered outside the Boise front offices to protest the deal. Said one fan, "What the hell is BT smoking?! We've stuck with the Spuds even while they've struggled and deserve better than this. To give up a first-round pick for Silva is ridiculous."

Ridiculous indeed. "Sure the market is soft for relievers, but one would expect to get more in return for a first-round pick. Teague pulls a lot of head-scratchers but this may be among his worst," said one anonymous GM.

Silva has slashed .266/.334/.391 (.725 OPS) thus far in 2063 and has already compiled a +1.4 WAR. He is on pace for 25 doubles, 6 triples, and 59 RBI. His value though is mostly in his glove. The lefty is fielding at a more than solid pace with a .982 PCT, +2.0 ZR, and 1.036 EFF. He unseats Fernando Segura who has struggled at the plate with a .524 OPS in 2060, .459 last season, and .670 this season with a +0.6 WAR. He posted a combined -2.1 WAR in the last two years.

Cornelio Martínez is 1-1 in 15 games with a 3.38 ERA, 2.1 K/BB, and 1.45 WHIP.

if Silva returns to his 2061 level, you're getting a bargain given most of my return is still in the low minors. Way too early to know how this one plays out. I think it was a win-win trade, personally.
