Boise Spuds 49 54 .476 DIV -11 WC -6 L10: 4-6 Strk: L4
Boise has taken GM Ben Teague's plan of grabbing a longshot wild card and run away from it. Not that it's on the team, of course. One thing to say, "We can hail mary a postseason spot!" when a team has been constructed for the bottom of the division. Anyway, the Spuds wrapped a split of a home series, won another home game vs New Orleans, then proceeded to drop 4 in a row including opening a series in Charlotte with a 1-11 whooping.
v Atlantic City 4-9 L SP Robert Carlson (L) - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
v Atlantic City 5-3(11) SP Muneer bin Khairy (ND) - 7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
The Spuds won a 4-game series in Atlantic City back in June. Now they had the Gamblers at home and started Sim #16 by splitting a 4-game set. The third game of the series was a close affair until P Abban 'Eeyore' Layar gave up 3 runs without recording an out in the top of the 6th. "A solid vet to lift up the bullpen," Layar has not been as advertised. Boise did get 2 triples from 1B Tracy 'Jigga' Allison and he added a stolen base for good measure. In the finale, the Spuds fell behind 3-0 but tied things up in the 8th and CL Mario Santos somehow ushered the game into extra frames despite walking 3 in the 9th inning.
v New Orleans 5-4 W SP Mahad 'Furball' Einan (ND) - 5.1 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
P Brian Groves SV(3)
v New Orleans 6-11 L SP Phil 'Brewmeister' Cole (L) - 4.1 IP, 11 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
v New Orleans 3-4 L P Juan Guzmán (ND) - 7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
v New Orleans 6-11 L Carlson (L) - 5.2 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
The Spuds welcomed the Crawdads to Boise by sending 'Furball' to gift them 10 hits. But New Orleans' SP John Lucas was nice enough to acknowledge the gift by surrendering 9 in just over 6 innings. Relievers Gerald Rogers and Brian Groves held tight for the 1-run victory. The rest of the series did not go well for Boise. Cole had his first hiccup in Idaho in the 2nd game. The Spuds' Guzmán did everything he could do to grab a W in the 3rd game, but New Orleans' Micah Harrington was just that much better holding Boise's lineup in check. CF Bob Hills nabbed his 25th bag of the season in the loss. Crawdad 3B Tom Guenette was 3-4 with a double and a HR. Carlson undoubtedly had a terrible outing in the 6-11 loss to wrap up the series, but Rogers sealed the loss by giving up 4 runs in the 9th inning. 'Jigga' Allison posted his 46th stolen base on the year.
@ Charlotte 1-11 L SP bin Khairy[/url] (L) - 5.0 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 4 K
In the opening game of a road set, Charlotte SP Ignacio Lewis, perhaps remembering being cut by Boise back in 2058, humbled the Spuds allowing only 1 run in 7 innings. Not that it mattered as the Flyers offense rocked bin Khairy and P Bart Crews for a combined 11 runs on 10 hits.
