The Morning Glory 2060.04: Wilson Hurt

Post by bcslouck » Fri Sep 27, 2024 1:30 pm

Claimed from Omaha, Robert Wilson was brought in with the hope he'd revive his career and move on. That won't be the case in 2060.

After starting off pretty well through May, Wilson started unraveling, eventually ending his season with a torn UCL.

Rocky Mountain was hoping he'd pitch well enough to opt-out after this season. Those chances dwindled into the Summer and now look abysmal. The team appears to be on the hook for his $8.6M salary next season with 2 player options to follow.

With the salary cap now set to drop over the next few years, his cap hit is more a nuisance than originally planned to be. If he does not opt-out, chances are the team will evaluate his rehab to see if he's worth keeping around one more year in hopes of declining his player option in 2062. The organization should still have some cap flexibility next year, though that could get eaten up quick beyond next year if they decide to resign franchise legend Malik bin Mazin.

The team's playoff status could determine some things too. The team has been fading down the stretch and the money of some of the players without value may not matter much if they decide to do some sort of rebuild. A rebuild would probably keep him here for the long haul. Sources say the front office is still weighting their options as they still see the division as still winnable beyond this year with the right moves and at the very least, still see themselves as competitors for a wild card spot.

Back to Wilson. The injury hurts the team's depth and cap space for next year. Even if he's cut, that's a lot of money that's dead. A claim that looked like a savvy move in May not looks disastrous.

That's some really rough luck. Hope he opts out or bounces back.
