Now featuring tables

Last week we heard a song about the pitching staff, this week we'll stick to the tired team preview of our own team for the offense. I included tables as I was today years old when I figured out you could make a table in 10 seconds with the help of AI.

C9Eduardo Medine21SR3535Normal5446554299451111
Catcher has always been a weak spot for us throughout this run. This year is no different. John Adams had a career year last season posting 2.3 WAR in just 83 games. But had similar offensive stats to career average and worse throwing stats. Weird. Medine is a surprise. Cesar Roman won the job in spring training, but we opted to try to hoard Medine for organizational depth. The fact that we'd have to give that depth back to Nashville may have had something to do with that decision.

Papi and Chunk are back to be the DH/1B combo. They often flip flop because thy have similar defense and to get extra rest. Randall Grey will play 2B everyday to start the year. Though I'm sure his versatility will be called upon as the team and season evolves. Felix Ramos, also very versatile, will play 3B primarily. He manned the hot corner mostly last season and had a bounce back year. Kelsey Perry lost a point of range and errors since last season. He now looks human at 10/10/10/10. If he only puts up +15 zone rating instead of his usual +20, I'm fine with that.

Juan Castillo seems to be in decline. We wrung a career high 2.4 WAR out of him in a half of a season. Not sure if we can do the same this year. He'll mostly be a power bat off the bench, cady for Felix Ramos late in games and against lefties. Pat Currie is a surprise injury replacement for both Ignacio Venegas and fellow Rule 5'er Juan Martinez. So he'll probably only be here for a month to get an extended look. But you never know. I didn't think he'd be here on opening day. Venegas has started sharp decline. He's lost a point of contact, eye and 2 points of range. I'm glad he got injured as it prolonged a tough decision in a year where I'm focused on flipping to a younger group. As for Juan Martinez, I'm using his 2 day "bruised elbow" injury as an excuse to give him a month in AAA to cross train him in preparation for a super utility role. His bat sucks, but defense is king right now and I really don't have a backup plan if Kelsey Perry goes down.

Angel Gonzalez took us back a little when he opted in to his remaining contract. That wasn't part of the gameplan. He did a fine job last season, but may have regressed some more. Juan Serna (.309/.371/.455) and Darren Wearne(.273/,342/.818) both did their best to push forward my plan to release him after this season. They are both young and very good defensively. Gonzo, along with Dane Licht, both have 4 range. That's about as low as I'll go with a corner. A big reason why we didn't overspend on a DH over the winter. So as far as our corners go, Gonzo and Licht have the job for now with Serna and Wearne subbing late and handling lefties. One of them could push Gonzales out of the fold sometime this summer. It also should be noted that we are only carrying 12 pitchers(4 starters) the first few weeks of the season. So some sort of decision will need to be made here by April 23.

In CF, Rooney is the man... when healthy. He posted a 3.4 WAR in just 100 games last season along with gold glove caliber defense. Tate is our 5th rule 5 pick to stick on offense. We resigned Kosho Kondo only to have him lump a point of range. So ultimately we feel Tate is an upgrade. There were strong considerations to keep both, but in reality, I'd probably use Randall Gray or Darren Wearne as 3rd string CF over Kondo anyway. So he is in DFA limbo at the moment.

Martinez will make a good super sub if he hit anything. otherwise he's really really limiting. I'm rooting for him.

He's going to be one of those guys where I can't really quantify if he helps my team or not. He'll be a negative WAR player, but he'll also help my 13 pitchers pitch better than they really are. I just need to find enough offense in the other 8 spots in the lineup to make it look like I know what I'm doing, even if he isn't helping at all.

That's where his ZR and efficiency should give you some ideas. But what I've been seeing is everyone taking a hit whenever they go to BBA.
