2031 River Monsters Beat (2031-09-30) Issue 4

Post by Spiccoli » Tue Jun 27, 2017 5:01 pm

New GM takes over with one week left in the season.

Scott "Spiccoli" Piccoli was introduced early this morning as the 3rd (or 4th?) GM of the TWC River Monsters to much fanfare. Actually, there might have been one other local news team on hand and a lost reporter from CattleNetwork.com looking for the 10:00am auction.

TWC is currently battling for last place and managed to sabotage their potential #1 pick by going 3-4 during the last week. When this was brought to his attention, Scott quickly and sternly responded there will never be any talk of the "T" word and every employee, from #1 player - Ryan Cooper to the Right Field Ball Boy protecting the Bull Pen will give 100% effort in every game as if the league championship is on the line.

It appeared the half of those in attendance starting suffering from motion sickness after all the eye rolling going on in the room.

However, Team Owner Robin Wells, is currently in no mood to just to give anyone, including his new GM any slack or time for learning curve. He reemphasized the desire to dump Juan Jose Mayorga and his contract by the end of the season... seven days from today. Good luck with that one Mr. Piccoli. Unfortunately, for Mr Wells, Mayorga is extremely popular both in the Twin Cities and nationally around the league. Which totally makes sense, because Juan Jose has racked up a staggering career 47-62 Win/Lose record with a sterling 4.24 ERA.

And he's signed through 2036... I'm sure the phones will be exploding with interest for Mayorga's services.

Other Team Goals by Mr Well's were more ambiguous and less direct. Scott mentioned that the words "Don't Suck Completely" and try to improve "Team ERA" and maybe "Increase Attendance" were spoken. :deadhorse:

Needless to say, Mr Spiccoli probably couldn't have picked a better time to join the team. He's going to have the full post and off season to get familiar with team organization and be ready for a fresh start at a Championship run next season.

Twin Cities will be closing the season with a four game away series against the Crushers from Cali. Of note will be the aforementioned Mayorga being reinserted into the starting lineup to replace 3-7 Danny Zhang who blistered his finger playing with his son on a hot playground slide. Maybe this start will be beginning of a new era for Juan Jose in the Twin Cities and get the owner off his back.

It's going to be fun to see what Twin Cities does.

Whatever you do, don't miss the rule 5 draft sim. There will be loads of stop gap options.

That's true. Louisville, Madison, Des Moines, and Omaha always have great players to take in the Rule 5 Draft.

Yeah, I've already started trolling around the league checking players.

The only downside is that they must stay on the active roster all season or be forfeited I believe.

Well, technically there's not much the owner can do to the GM in an online league right?

I just thought it was funny to get that message from the owner today. Maybe it's personal? Sounds like a future potential funny plot line.

On the whole the owner can't do a lot to you, though he's still the guy who sets your budgets.

When you play in online leagues for a long time, if you're trying to build a program (not just a single pennant winner), my opinion is that you'll find you're best served to manage to increase budget...meaning control costs, but win a little, which then results in your owner giving you more budget to spend next year. It's a slowish way of going, but it seems to work pretty well.
