Recap
What a week. The Austin Shredders we ere swept in a three-game set by the Mexico City Aztecs in which their pitching got absolutely slaughtered. There was no mercy shown by the Mexico City lineup as they dispatched Glenn Hargrove in the 4th and hung a 5-spot on him and then did the same to Max Birstall, the one time closer who has now been relegated to “I just want anybody else to get hurt” duty. He last just 1/3 of an inning and gave up five runs himself in just six pitches, one of those pitches was depositeedd into the cheap seats by Julio Martinez with two aboard. The only offense came from Arturo López who single home a run in the top of the ninth of a game long over. The final 10-1, avoiding the shutout, but accumulating just four hits! Game two was more of the same, except this time the Shredders notched just three hits in a 9-1 loss that did feature a solo home run by Luis Rúbio, another garbage run in the top of the ninth. This time it was Mus'ad Amr that took the beating putting up almost an identical line as Hargrove, 3.2 IP, 5R, 4BB, 5K. Game 3? Another beating. This time José Ávila received the beat down, last just into the third inning and getting mauled for seven runs!. The final line for the starters in this series?
IP 9.2, H 17, R 17, ER 17, BB 8, K 9, HR 2
The Shredders did take two of three from the Calgary Pioneers. Jorge Marín put in a solid effort in Game One and Socrates Kazantziakis, fresh off a sting on the IR, notched his first homer of the year and Glenn Fox hit a solo shot in the top of the 11th to bring home the victory. Game Two was a hard-fought contest and lefty journeyman Wilson López made a game effort, but Calgary won the game 4-2. Game Three was a bit of redemption for Hargrove, who got beat up by the Aztecs as he went seven full innings, allowing just two runs to pick up his second in the win column with a 7-4 victory.
Is It Time to Give Socrates His Hemlock.
The Professor, Socrates Kazantziakis is starting to slow down. Signed to a five-year, 48 million dollar contract, Socrates made the front office very happy in the first year of the deal, playing excellent defense, batting.279 while also stealing a career high 40 bases. While he did come up 39 home runs short of the 40/40 club, all looked good. Then came 2060. The Professor hit just .234, started to slow down in the field and began to show his age, which was 34 that season. Kazantzanikas is off to an even worst start this year, having moved full time to 3B and is just 4-for-24 on the year. Socrates still has next year and the year after that to continue his down ward slide, and that includes a player option after this season that will bump his salary from eight million to 12 million if he accepts it. That will eat a lot of the salary cap for Socrates. Looks like somebody wasn’t thinking about the future when they signed him to the deal.

Re: Time for Socrates to Take His Hemlock?
Socrates is such an odd guy. Much coveted but always frustrating for whomever pays him.
