During the playoffs, the team has been trying to relax and reflect on Edmonton's future and their own individual careers. They've been watching a good share of the BBA playoff games together. Also included in this effort have been some team bonding exercises.
One of the activities selected was a friendly game of cornhole. The pitchers and hitters were split off into pairs and pitted against each other in a friendly tournament. At most times the competition brought the players together and was a good for a few laughs. With one notable exception: the match-up between pitcher Gabriel Soto and center fielder Patrick Cross and their unsuspecting partners. They had an unexpected exchange and escalation that went something like this:
Cross: "Not so tough when you're throwing underhanded, eh Gabe?"
Soto: "I'm still good enough plunk you and leave a mark."
Cross: "Go ahead, do your worst."
(Soto whizzes a bean bag narrowly missing Cross' head)
Cross: "You're better at aiming for the head than finding the hole."
Soto: "Didn't seem to have that issue with your mom."
A pushing match ensued and other players promptly broke up the hot-tempered pair.
Said general manager Mike Bauer, "A few of the guys are a little on-edge after finishing last place and not making the playoffs. Some of them don't know where they will be playing next year. That's a lot of stress, but we're just looking to have fun and create some memories."
Bauer paused, then added "But Cross and Soto on the same team, I think it's safe to report that you probably won't see that again."
