Stuart 'Psycho' Pearce
Imposing veteran Stuart Pearce may have seen the curtain drop on a long career. In a not entirely surprising move, the left-hander was placed on irrevocable waivers following the conclusion of Spring Training.
Pearce had a fantastic year in 2029, but failed to replicate his success in the following two years. Last season, Pearce was relegated mostly to the bullpen, a result of serious decline in his velocity and overall breaking ability. While a massive, positive presence in the clubhouse, the decline in his results was too much for club officials to continue to ignore.
Edmonton's AAA affiliate in Winnipeg is stocked with relievers just waiting for the chance to prove their worth, and while a playoff challenge is not on the cards, the club is unwilling to continue to lose 90 games a year if it can be avoided. Holding on to Pearce appears to seen as a move that would guarantee that.
"Obviously we're not happy we've had to make this decision," responded GM Rhys Allen. "Stuart is a movitating presence. Truth be told, he hasn't been entirely happy with his role with the club since his move to the bullpen, nor with the results on the field. The results I can understand, as nobody is happy about losing that many games, but everyone needs to accept the role they're given. This is a team. That being said, despite his misgivings, Stuart has been fantastic about putting his nose to the grind. Unfortunately, I think a little bit of father time has caught up with him, and we've reached the end of the line.
We hope that Stuart understands this isn't a personal thing - he's well regarded here by all. We're massively thankful for the few years he's given us, and the impact he's had as this club has grown. It's time now for some younger arms to take up the mantle and contribute. It's our hope that Stuart can relax a little in Winnipeg and convey his wisdom and experience to the youngsters there. Assuming of course no one picks him up off waivers!"
