29.02 Jacks Announce First Acquisition

The Edmonton Jackrabbits made their first big acquisition this afternoon. It wasn’t a highly coveted prospect or a big-name veteran, and he won’t be throwing strikes or hitting dingers. The first member of the Edmonton Jackrabbits is Homer the Homerun Ball.



A famous figure in Edmonton, Homer has been the official mascot of every professional baseball team in the city since 1981, and is among the most beloved Edmontonians of all time. The rotund rascal teases visitors, poses for pictures and leads the Edmonton faithful in root-root-rooting for the home team, and now he’ll be doing all of those things for the Jacks. Already, Homer has begun making appearances at community events throughout the city, entertaining children and parents alike with his playful antics.

First developed by the Edmonton Trappers of the Pacific Coast League, Homer has been through several iterations and reinventions, but he’s always retained his big baseball body, little “Homer” hat, and his cheerful expression.

General Manager Adam Dee discussed Homer with the press this afternoon: “Homer is an Edmonton icon, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him representing the Edmonton Jackrabbits as we make our Brewster Baseball Association debut this summer.”

Given John Ducey Ballpark, it seems we won't be seeing a whole lot of the Homerun Ball.

This season at the ballpark (in real life), I went to 12 games and saw 2 home runs.
