Seattle Times, 1995, v.4, 1997 Optimism

Going into the 1997 season, Seattle brings back all the major offensive stars, Pennebaker, Randall, Rucker, Rivero, and Astudillo. Also, newcomers Herrero and Olsen look to improve on last season's totals. In terms of free agency, Seattle's main order of business was to resign Rucker, who at 29, turned in his best season. After 5 sims of negotiation, finally a contract was reached, which should keep one of the league's best catchers in Seattle for the next several years.

For pitching, waiver pickup Combs, who did well down the stretch, decided to opt for free agency rather than resign. despite this, the remainder of the pitching staff is intact for 1997. Several AAA pitchers, such as Walter and Schuster, who excelled last season, may get a look at spring training.

1997 Question marks: Who is in starting rotation for next season behind Rhoades, Barbosa and Spivey? Seattle may be looking for an ace in free agency, one who can help come playoffs.

Does Seattle look for more offense? They are rumored to be looking for another OF bat.

Things look good for Seattle next season. But we'll see...
