Mellott, Martinez Settle Up

October 5, 2062 | Marshall Islands > After an uncertain season, the Bikini Krill took two steps toward clarity today, announcing that they have come to terms with utility infielder Manuel Martinez, and fan favorite second baseman Napoleon Mellott on one-year deals that will keep them out of the arbitration room. Martinez's deal was his first under his arbitration seasons, and is reported to have been a $1.4M deal. Mellott's was his final season, and is expected to be in the range of $6M.

The Martinez singing suggests to outside pundits that the club may be parting ways with third baseman Kata Ishibashi, who stumbled heavily this season. Mellott's future, too, was under some question as he's getting older, and his skill set is adjusting to his age. He had been quietly asking for a multi-season deal for considerably more, however, the club seemed to feel a 1-season deal was advantageous.

The signings still leave the Krill with several pending arbitration cases, including star catcher Pedro Jimenez, veteran first baseman Mike McClure, reliever Dana Munce, and outfielder Graham Aubry (whose injury record has decimated his defense to the point he spent most of this season in AAA), in addition to Ishibashi. Of those, only Jimenez seems assured of receiving an offer, though Munce and McClure could have value.
