Three Months of Travis & Ndururi

September 28, 2062 | Forever Land > It was early June when, realizing that the team's future may not be as bright as it might, and that aging starting pitcher Brody Picot was both expensive for their tastes, and might be at his peak value, the Bikini front office decided to make a move. They dealt him to Charlotte for two prospects. While Picot and the Flyers are now entering the SPET as Atlantic Division champions, the kids Bikini got are finished up with their first season at the Rookie Level with the Ogden Thunder Ducks.

I figured it was worth seeing how they fell.

So let's do that.

Mitku Ndururi

The second baseman turned 19 mid-season. He was initially drafted by the Flyers in the 9th round back in 2061. Upon coming to the Thunder Ducks he started 38 games and posted a remarkably dry .154/.201/.300 slash line. Not known for any power, he did manage 3 homers in 130 AB. Known as a bit of a runner, he stole three bases in four tries. The team originally had a bit of a concern for the defense, but Ndururi's glove at second was above league average.

These numbers are not particularly far off those he turned while with Charlotte, and to be clear, are a little unnerving. You'd think a guy flipping from 18 to 19 in mid-season would take to R-Level pitching with a bit more fervor. On the positive side, the StatsPlus development metric says he has picked up at least a bit of BABIP and speed, and that his ability to turn two his smoother on the pivot.

Scouts still rate him a 45/80, so that's good. Baseball people say his potentials are still potentialling, and that's good, too. But right now the jury is really still out.

2063 Projection: Repeat R-Level in Ogden

Dave Travis

Travis started 16 games in left field for the Thunder Ducks, and they were not impressive at all. Or, if they were, it was not for the right reasons. He showed little to no power while posting a .172/.186/.224 slash line, considerably worse than his 10 games with the Charlotte organization. Really, the less said, the better. Except, of course, from a development standpoint the good news is that a few ratings went up, but the bad news is that both his plate discipline potentials received downgrades.

Good News Mrs. Travis! The operation was a success but your son's career is in the dumper!

Seriously, that corner outfielders who can hit a little are not the most rare gems on the beach, it leaves one to wonder what kind of future the kid has. It's a real problem for the Travis family. The mere fact that he got only 16 starts says what kind of competition he has for what is pretty minimal playing time.

Still, the overall rating sits at 45/80, which, given his stats is perhaps a silver lining.

2063 Projection: Repeat R-Level in Ogden

Summary
Apparently shaken by being traded, Picot went on to post some pretty ugly numbers in Charlotte, so in the end I suppose we can't really complain. And given how the Krill looked at the time, as well as how they ended the season, it's hard to suggest that holding onto Picot would have changed much of anything. So ultimately, it still seems like making the trade was a good thing for Bikini. Having Ndururi and Travis struggling in Ogden is probably more valuable than having a 37-year-old starter on the roster. Picot's deal runs out this year (a main reason he was dealt), so if the team wants him back, they can probably get him.

(Don't bet the ranch)

One suggests that Ndururi has more upside, but you'd have to think that both of them really needed to be able to play their way to the team's Short A club in Port au Prince, but neither did.
