Fans Convinced Brown Ready To Opt-Out

August 7, 2062 | Sacramento: After tonight's loss to the Sacramento Mad Popes, the Krill's second in a row, the mood around the team has been dower. The Klub sits a total of six games out of a wildcard slot with only 46 left to play. It's not an insurmountable gap, but the climb is looking steeper every day. Tomorrow's starter, Jon Brown, didn't help things by declining to be interviewed while saying "I have to stay focused on the last few starts here."

Fans grabbed that phrase and immediately began speculation as to whether the veteran pitcher has already decided to execute the opt-out clause on his contract, essentially declining $9M for next season and giving the Krill's front off ice a pair of their own options.

"No one wants to play for a loser," one poster said.

"Brown is gone," said another.

Brown, known for being cantankerous at times, is having a solid season, though after getting out of the gate hot he's settles a little. At 7-10, he's been a bit unlucky despite a .268 BABIP and respectable side numbers. At 34 years of age, ne wonders if the team would be just as happy to see him opt out. Insiders note that the Krill finances have not been particularly robust, something that could have contributed to the recent sacking and replacement of Bikini's accounting firm.

If Brown did leave, it would represent the end of the Three-Headed Snake rotation of Brown, Arturo Meza (9-7), and Takashi Nakamura (7-5). The trio has been very good at times, but also shaky at others. Paul Worboys (6-5) has joined them this year and shown similar tendencies, the lastest moment of wheels falling off the train being tonight's 6-run outburst allowed to the M'opes. Fellow Rookie Herman Deckard made a splash early, but the league has caught up to him. So, at the end of the day, this could be the last ride for the old brigade, so to speak.

In the meantime, the team prepares to face the Mad Popes again tomorrow in what could be something akin to a do or die matchup in more ways than one.
