Does Meza Get the Postseason Yips?

October 6, 2061 | Forever Land | After a rough beginning to the season (2-4, 5.96 in April), righthander Arturo Meza settled in to complete a solid enough season, finishing 12-12 with a 4.33 ERA, striking out 161 hitters in essentially 200 innings. That last may be the dealmaker for the team, because Mez made 35 starts on the season, most on the team. "With our injuries, we needed a reliable guy who could reliably take the ball every fifth day," said manager Kate Fiscus. "Arturo definitely did that."

Alas, since the turn of the calendar into the middle of September, and into the post season, Meza's results have turned disastrous. His two post season starts have resulted in 10 runs in 5.1 innings, during which he's allowed 12 hits (two homers), and walked 6 hitters.

Fans are unhappy.

"He's a choker," said Tandi Patterson, a communications specialist in the Westmoreland Robotics Corp. "You can see it when he takes the mound because his eyes get wide as saucers. I'm using him as a model to program responses in my in-home models for when they screw something up beyond repair."

A glance at Meza's record does make one wonder.

His two starts with Bikini in 2059 resulted in fire earned runs in 10.1 innings as he allowed 13 hits and 3 walks. Going back further shows that he struggles in college (7.71 ERA in seven postseason 2053 innings9 hits and 5 walks), struggled at Rookie Ball (13.50 ERA in 2.2 [also] 2053 innings- 4 hits and 3 walks), and struggled in AA (4.26 ERA in 6.1 2054 innings, 11 hits and a walk).

The postseason, silly or not, does not appear to be his friend.

Still, he's undaunted, and there are reasons for him to be. His overall ranking in the "world's best starters" has risen such that he's arguing for inclusion in the top 20--solid #1 territory. His stuff is as good as it ever was. Scouts continue to say he's got what it takes.

"I don't feel any different out there," he said after the team's off-day workout. "I'm doing my best, so all I can do is take the ball whenever Kate gives it to me, and try harder."
